A field of gun autumn staying types take to the Rosehill track in Saturday’s marquee Sydney race and below are our insider Tancred Stakes 2018 tips and updated odds on the mile and a half feature.

Due to run as Rosehill Race 6 at 3:30pm (AEDT) the Group 1 $1.5 million KIA Tancred Stakes (2400m) is shaping-up as a two horse affair looking at the latest markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Despite not having won over the distance, the Darren Weir-trained Gailo Chop is the $2.30 favourite having won three of his past four starts including last weekend’s Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m).

It was an impressive on-speed effort and three length romp home in the end for the French import, suggesting the step-up to 2400m should be a non-issue second time round after his unplaced run in Dubai at his only other start at the distance.

The danger looking at the Tancred Stakes betting markets is Almandin ($3.60), winner of the Melbourne Cup in 2016 and looking in top form again this autumn as an eight-year-old.

Almandin comes off a second-up fourth in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) from Flemington’s Super Saturday, a race Gailo Chop finished second in before the Ranvet success on Slipper Day.

This is the right distance to suggest the Liam Howley-trained stayer can turn the tables on Gailo Chop and return to winning form for the first time since a nearly three length win at Flemington over 2500m last September.

#9 Single Gaze ($7)

Giving Nick Olive’s consistent mare another chance to breakthrough out of the placings and post her first win since June last year. She barely runs a bad race and has been right up there with this class all season. Fifth in the Australian Cup two back saw her under two lengths beaten and finishing off well before her second to Gailo Chop in a typically fighting effort from her last Saturday. On the quick back-up, but she’s better suited at 2400m having run second over the distance in last year’s Caulfield Cup. This is her fourth run-in with Gailo Chop, can she get her first score on the board with the distance to her advantage?

#6 Auvray ($9.50)

Love the price offered-up on this flying Richard Freedman-trained import whose lead-up win in the Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m) at the track was encouraging. Chases the double last completed by Hartnell (2015). Drawn in historically the best barrier (2) that has produced more winners than any other gate in the past 30 years. A top two run in the lead-up is the best form to bring into the Tancred Stakes and he’s got the 50% winning strike rate at the track (4:2-0-0), plus boasts the best 2400m form of any horse in the field (8:4-0-0). Market mover and the money trail could be worth following despite the 3.5kg rise at WFA here.

#1 Gailo Chop ($2.30)

Deserving favourite based on his ultra-consistent form and the all-too-easy romp home in the Ranvet last start. The distance is the query, will he run it out strong enough against a field of better 2400m horses? There’s every chance he will and do the double last completed by Silent Achiever (2014). Boasts the best Win (48%) and Place (76%) rates of the field and is proven at Rosehill. Plenty of boxes ticked.
