The final field for Monday’s much awaited Adelaide Cup 2018 has drawn 18 hopefuls with the favourites having mixed luck in the barrier draw for the two mile South Australian classic.
One of the country’s most popular races, the Group 2 $400,000 Adelaide Cup (3200m) runs as Morphettville Race 7 on Monday afternoon and favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au to take it out is the Lindsay Park-trained Shocking mare Fanatic.
Bred to stay, the five-year-old proved herself over the 3200m last spring winning the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m).
She has been on the steady improve this preparation with increasing distances including the eye-catching second to Aloft at Flemington last weekend in the Listed Roy Higgins Quality (2600m).
Going up from 55kg to 57.5kg in the Adelaide Cup weights, Fanatic will need to step-up again but the two miles and gun barrier three draw with Michael Walker retaining the ride put her right in the mix.
Occupying the second line of Adelaide Cup betting following Fanatic ($4.80) is last year’s third placegetter Master Of Arts ($6.50) who had opposite luck drawing out in gate 16 for Monday.
Ace Victorian trainer Darren Weir saddles-up the six-year-old grey entire who comes off a second from last weekend’s Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) at the track won by Etah James who doesn’t back-up in the Adelaide Cup.
Master Of Arts has had four Morphettville runs including his Lord Reims Stakes win in 2017 and subsequent third to Annus Mirabilis in the Adelaide Cup results last Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival.
This year he goes up to 59kg heading the Adelaide Cup weights along with James Bull’s New Zealand raider Benzini.
Benzini is also a Lord Reims Stakes graduate, the evergreen eight-year-old having run third, and has Monday’s widest barrier (18 of 18) to overcome with Rosie Myers coming aboard for the ride.
The other female hoop in the Adelaide Cup field this year is Clare Lindop who announced her retirement on Tuesday following this year’s carnival.
Lindop rode the 2006 Adelaide Cup winner Exalted Time to victory and has her final ride in the race this year aboard the Grant Young-trained Tunes in gate six, the nine-year-old coming off back-to-back seconds at the track.
Master Of Arts meanwhile is joined in the Adelaide Cup field by two other Weir-trained stablemates including the well-fancied Ormito in gate five with Craig Williams to ride.
The ultra-consistent Mamool five-year-old is German-bred and has finished third in his latest three starts, including in the Roy Higgins Quality last weekend.
Ormito currently pays $9 in the Adelaide Cup odds to win over further than a mile for the first time, while local hope Exalted Lightning ($8) rounds out the single-figure hopefuls.
Another big winner at Tuesday’s Adelaide Cup barrier draw, Exalted Lightning is the other Young-trained runner in the race jumping from gate two with Todd Pannell aboard on 54.5kg.
The Blevic six-year-old from Murray Bridge hasn’t finished worse than fourth in his last nine starts and is out to atone for his top four performance in the Lord Reims.
Monday marks his 12th go at Morphettville and he shapes-up as the big improver having run 10th in last year’s Adelaide Cup results.
Along with the aforementioned third placed Master Of Arts, the other best out of last year’s Adelaide Cup chasing the win in 2018 is the Robbie Laing-trained Double Bluff from Cranbourne.
Two back the seven-year-old import beat Ormito (3rd) in the Listed Torney Cup (2500m) at Moonee Valley before a lead-up fifth in the Roy Higgins that saw him ease out to $10 in betting for Monday’s Group 2 feature.
