Golden Pendant 2017 Field: Euro Angel Draws Barrier 1

2017 Golden Pendant odds on the improving Hawkes Racing-trained Euro Angel look set to firm after the mare came up trumps with barrier one for the lucrative feature on Golden Rose Day in Sydney on Saturday.

Scheduled to run as Rosehill Race 8 at 4:35pm (AEST) one event after the 2017 Golden Rose Stakes, this season’s Group 2 $400,000 Golden Pendant (1400m) features a 13-starter field of mares.

Getting the inside run with Brenton Avdulla booked for the ride is Rip Van Winkle five-year-old Euro Angel chasing her first win from six starts at Rosehill Gardens.

She is a three-time placegetter at the track however including a last start third behind Deploy (1st) and Epsom Handicap-bound Egg Tart on September 9 in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m).

Prior to that Euro Angel caught the eye first-up at Randwick crossing just a neck second in the Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1300m), but she’s coming off a lengthy winning drought that goes back to October last year.

Also drawn well in barrier two is the Chris Waller-trained Omei Sword who is out to improve on two unplaced runs this time in.

Hugh Bowman of Winx fame partners the four-year-old daughter of High Chaparral third-up with the mare last seen running just over three lengths back sixth to Ravi in the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on September 9.

At the same meeting last Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, Omei Sword was runner-up in the Golden Rose Stakes as a three-year-old but like Euro Angel she is out to break a notable drought with her last victory being in August of 2016.

Set to improve second-up after an eye-catching run fresh to cross fourth in the Theo Marks Stakes is the Ron Quinton-trained Dixie Blossoms.

The Street Sense five-year-old is two-from-three second-up and has form around Foxplay who she finished third to in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) during the autumn.

Quinton is dually represented in the Golden Pendant field having also accepted for Daysee Doom who has work to do out wide in barrier 12.

Daysee Doom is one of the likely favourites in Golden Pendant betting for 2017 despite the double-digit draw for the five-year-old daughter of Domesday.

She has an excellent Rosehill record of two wins, a second and two thirds from six previous runs at the track.

Back in May she was on the Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) over this distance in Scone before her first-up third in the Sheraco Stakes.

Also saddling-up two fancies in the race are Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott, and Bjorn Baker.

Waterhouse & Bott have recent Toy Show Quality winner Sweet Redemption in barrier four and Sort After, a likely roughie shot in the race, jumping from gate seven.

Baker meanwhile looks a big chance to continue his good early season success with stablemates Bonny O’Reilly (barrier three) and Lubiton (barrier nine).

Snitzel four-year-old Lubiton won back-to-back races before her eighth in a blanket finish on Newcastle Cup Day last Friday beaten under three lengths by the winner Zanbagh in the Group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m).

Bonny O’Reilly won at Rosehill over 1200m two back before suffering her first loss at the track (5-4-0-0) when fifth in the Sheraco Stakes from a wide alley last time out.
