Thousand Guineas 2017 First Acceptances: Catchy On Top

Racing Victoria took first acceptances for the Cox Plate, Caulfield Guineas and Group 1 $500,000 Thousand Guineas (1600m) on Tuesday with entries for the latter featuring 91 three-year-old fillies.

Contested as the key support act on Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas Day on October 14, the Thousand Guineas is shaping up as an open affair without an early standout in the markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Currently sharing the top line of futures Thousand Guineas odds post-first acceptances are Catchy and Shoals at $8.

The David & Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained Catchy also still holds a 2017 Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas nomination to take on the boys instead.

The daughter of Fastnet Rock is best known for her Group 1 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) win in Melbourne during the autumn.

She failed to fire when dead last (16th) in the mud behind She Will Reign in Sydney’s Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) after that, but was beaten by the wet track.

First-up Catchy finished a credible second in the Group 3 Quezette Stakes (1100m) back at Caulfield Racecourse and she is a chance to race again this weekend at Flemington in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) down the straight.

Co-trainer David Hayes has prepared three previous Thousand Guineas winners including Stay With Me (2015).

This year the stable have 12 remaining hopefuls including also recent winner of the Silver Shadow – Furious Stakes double Formality and Golden Slipper third placegetter Tulip who face off in the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes in Sydney this weekend.

Shoals is also by gun sire Fastnet Rock, the Anthony Freedman-trained filly undefeated at Thousand Guineas first acceptance stage having won all four of her career starts.

She has winning form over Formality, who she defeated narrowly at Randwick in the autumn’s Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m), and also won first-up at Moonee Valley on September 9 saluting in the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m).

The only other three-year-old currently under $10 in the latest Thousand Guineas 2017 betting odds is Booker ($9) prepared by Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra.

A nicely-bred Written Tycoon filly, Booker is a dual Group placegetter and has held her own against the boys.

Last start on September 2 she faced off against one of the early Caulfield Guineas favourites Merchant Navy and was only a neck off the undefeated Ciaron Maher-trained colt in the Group 3 H.D.F. McNeil Stakes (1200m).

Last year Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained their first Thousand Guineas winner, Global Glamour (2016), and the duo are back in 2017 with five first acceptors led by Sebring filly Pandemonium.

Pandemonium has enjoyed back-to-back wins in Sydney this time in, including over the mile at Warwick Farm on August 23, and is also earmarked for a Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) run at Randwick on September 30.
