The Queensland Winter Racing Carnival hosts its final black-type race day at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday and Caloundra Cup graduate Emerald City heads the Queensland Cup 2017 field and weights for the two-mile feature.
Running as the Sunshine Coast Race 7 at 4:02pm (AEST), this season’s $150,000 Listed Queensland Cup (3200m) has attracted a 16 starter field as the staying showdown takes place at Caloundra over Eagle Farm.
Drawn in gate 12 and allocated the 58kg top kilos, the David Vandyke-trained local hope Emerald City is out to improve on his last start fifth behind the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Supply And Demand at the track on July 1 in the Listed Caloundra Cup (2400m).
The Bernardini six-year-old rises notably up from 54k that run, when beaten five lengths by Thursday’s Grafton Cup favourite, and is also out over the 3200m for the first time so faces a number of challenges for the weekend.
Sydney’s Chris Waller has accepted for two gallopers in the Queensland Cup field chasing successive wins after taking out the 2016 edition in Brisbane with Murphy’s Delight.
This year Waller’s runners are Dutch Art six-year-old Soviet Courage (57.5kg) who has winning form up to 2600m and Oasis Dream gelding Richard Of Yorke (54kg).
Jim Byrne rides Soviet Courage from barrier three on Saturday, the galloper going up four kilos from the 53.5kg he carried to a brave fourth behind Gallic Chieftain last start in the Listed Winter Cup (2400m) at Rosehill.
The run prior the horse was tested over the two miles and finished fifth to Plot Twist at Randwick in the Stayers Cup (3200m), run on a Heavy (10) track.
Imported stablemate Richard Of Yorke meanwhile is well-weighted for the Queensland Cup and has genuine staying abilities having run second in the Stayers Cup last month.
His latest run was back over a mile and a half when walking home at Randwick on June 24, but he has recovered since and will relish getting out over the extra metres on the weekend following a promising Rosehill trial on July 4.
The other heaviest-weighted Queensland Cup hope is the Michael Moroney-trained Araldo Junior (57kg) out to improve on his Winter Cup fifth.
Drawn the outside barrier but with plenty of time to overcome gate 16 is the Brian Smith-trained mare My Diamantine who is better weighted with 54.5kg.
Jeff Lloyd rides the veteran six-year-old in her 54th career run after being aboard for her eye-catching lead-up when second in the Caloundra Cup a fortnight ago.
The test for My Diamantine though will be the 3200m as she hasn’t won over further than 2000m over her career.
The other gun mare in the mix is War Baby who is likely to be scratched having also been accepted for a 2017 Grafton Cup run on Thursday over less metres.
Prepared at Beaudesert, the five-year-old is a genuine winter flyer backing up from an emphatic six and a half-length Ipswich win from June 17 to run third in both the Group 3 Tattersall’s Cup (2200m) at Doomben and the Caloundra Cup.
