Godolphin’s interim trainer Darren Beadman may be about to hand the reins over to James Cummings but the former hoop capped off a top Ipswich Cup Day on Saturday with Maternal and Kinshachi running the quinella in the Gai Waterhouse Classic 2017 results.

Earlier in the day Beadman and Godolphin took out the $60,000 Bundamba Plate (1100m) with race favourite Revenire, before dominating the card closer when Maternal also saluted for the punters in the $100,000 Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m).
Ridden by veteran Queensland hoop Jeff Lloyd, the four-year-old Street Cry mare jumped favourite in the Gai Waterhouse Classic, tipped to enjoy softer going at Ipswich after her lead-up ninth behind Bonny O’Reilly on a Good (4) Doomben track on June 3 in the Listed Helen Coughlan Stakes (1200m).
Jumping from the outside barrier (14) on Saturday, Maternal ($2.90) didn’t disappoint holding on narrowly to beat home the fellow Beadman-trained Kinshachi ($5) by a neck.
“I rode a lot for Gai over the years and to win her race gives me a great thrill,” Beadman told the media post-win on Saturday.
“And Jeff is a good mate of mine. We were both in Hong Kong at the same time and when I was riding for John Moore, he would often ride a lot of the lighter ones.
“He left a bit of meat on the bone for me!
“He’s riding like a 20-year-old at the moment. He’s a legend.”
Rounding out the Gai Waterhouse Classic trifecta in third over two lengths further back was the Stuart Kendrick-trained Banda Spice ($13) ridden by leading Queensland apprentice Tiffani Brooker who won the Listed Eye Liner Stakes the race prior aboard the Darryl Hansen-trained Monsieur Gustave.
Beadman said that going forward on the well-bred Maternal proved the winning move on Ipswich Cup Day and that it was nice to tick-off the important Black-Type success with the mare.
“We wanted to ride her forward again today,” he said.
“That’s how she won at Sandown [over 1300m on April 17] and the same again at Doomben [over 1350m on May 13].
“So back up to the 1350m today we put her right there and she responded.
“For Maternal to win Black-Type is very deserving.”
Beadman is keeping the option open to run both Maternal and or Kinshachi at Doomben this coming Saturday in the $500,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m).
