2017 Queensland Derby Field Released: Ana Royale In Barrier 3

Stuart Webb has paid up the late entry fee to get his filly Ana Royal in the Queensland Derby 2017 field against the boys this weekend with the three-year-old drawn a treat in barrier three at Doomben.

Last Saturday the daughter of Anacheeva ran a luckless eighth beaten three lengths by the Chris Waller-trained winner Egg Tart in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m).

Pulling up as though she hadn’t even had a run, Webb opted to put her on the short seven day turnaround with Ana Royale returning the to the same track and distance for the $600,000 Group 1 Queensland Derby (2200m) on Stradbroke Handicap Day.

The Queensland Derby is set to run as Doomben Race 7 at 3:00pm (AEST) and drew the full 16 starters allowed at the course plus five emergencies.

Ana Royale, to be ridden by Mark Zahra for the fourth time on the trot, is the sole filly in the mix out to be the first since Dariana (2010) to beat home the colts and geldings in the set weights clash.

Ana Royale is the sole filly in this year’s Queensland Derby field for Saturday

Prior to her Queensland Oaks loss, Ana Royale won the Group 3 SA Fillies Classic (2500m) and Adelaide and ran a half-length back for third to Egg Tart in Morphettville’s Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2010m).

Also a late entry into the Queensland Derby field is the new favourite in betting at Ladbrokes.com.au, Shocking Luck from New Zealand.

Connections of the Stephen Autridge & Jamie Richards-trained son of 2009 Melbourne Cup winner Shocking missed the first acceptance cut off by accident, before forking out the extra fee to get him into Saturday’s race.

Opie Bosson is back aboard the recent Group 3 Rough Habit Plate (2000m) winner at the track as Shocking Luck looks to improve on his lead-up sixth to Order Again in the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) at Eagle Farm.

Order Again is the most notable omission from the Queensland Derby on Saturday, the Brian Smith-trained galloper missing the race due to injury.

With the local young stayer out, the best out of the Grand Prix Stakes is now Darren Weir’s runner-up Volatile Mix.

Winner of the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) on May 13, the Pentire gelding was narrowly beaten in his Brisbane lead-up and would likely have been better suited to Saturday’s race taking place over the traditional 2400m at Eagle Farm.

Volatile Mix had an easy Tuesday trial at the Sunshine Coast, but suffered a blow in the Queensland Derby barrier draw out in gate 20 (into 15 of 16).

Weir has also accepted for Mongolian Wolf (4) to be ridden by Damian Lane as well as Rockstar Rebel (6) who has the 2012 Queensland Derby winning jockey Brad Rawiller aboard.

This season’s leading Group 1 hoop Hugh Bowman meanwhile is aboard livewire hope Ruthven for Caulfield’s Ciaron Maher, the Domesday colt coming off a second to Volatile Mix in the SA Derby.
