The lightly-raced Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained filly Booker is favourite to retain her undefeated status when she chases a second win on the trot heading to Adelaide as favourite in the National Stakes 2017 on Saturday.
The first of the Group support acts on The Goodwood Day 2017, this season’s $200,000 Group 3 National Stakes (1200m) is set to run as Morphettville Race 2 at 1:05pm (ACST).
A field of 10 two-year-olds is in the mix for the set weights sprint, with current National Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au led by the visiting Victorian-trained Booker at $2.45 and firming.
Damian Lane has the mount on the daughter of Written Tycoon from gate four, booker coming off a one length win on debut over 1100m at Flemington from May 6.
Up in class and distance for this, the bookies are taking no chances and she has already firmed in from opening odds of $2.80 on offer earlier in the week.
Won last season by subsequent Group 1 Myer Classic winning filly I Am A Star, the National Stakes odds for 2017 feature three other single-figure juveniles including Indian Thunder ($4.50).
Drawn one inside the favourite in barrier three with Brad Rawiller down to ride, Indian Thunder is prepared by the season’s best Darren Weir and has had two runs to date.
The first was a close second to Grandioso at Bendigo over 1000m before the Manhattan Rain colt posted a narrow victory in the Listed Queen Adelaide Stakes (1050m) at Morphettville a fortnight back.
Also coming off a top three run in the traditional Nation Stakes lead-up are the Phillip Stokes-trained Queen Adelaide Stakes runner-up It’s A Myth and third placed Mintha for Tony McEvoy.
Noel Callow stays on well-bred Sepoy filly It’s A Myth ($9.50) this weekend as the perennial runner-up chases her break through win at career start number five.
Redoute’s Choice filly Mintha meanwhile has run a close third in both her starts to date and pays $11 to go two better with a maiden victory at Morphettville in the National Stakes.
Shorter in the markets at $6 is the widely-drawn Pure Scot in the outside barrier (10 of 10) with Dwayne Dunn to ride.
Representing the Lindsay Park stable, Purrealist filly Pure Scott has enjoyed two wins and a third from her three career runs in Victoria to date.
She was last seen winning a lucrative $300,000 VOBIS Sires (1200m) race at Caulfield on April 22 and is out to bring that form over the same distance in Adelaide on Saturday.
