Victoria’s premier trainer Darren Weir continued his incredible week with a Group 2 win at Morphettville on Schweppes Oaks Day, the favourite Amelie’s Star earning a possible trip to Brisbane with a victory in the 2017 Queen Of The South Stakes.
The lightly-raced five-year-old daughter of Testa Rossa, formerly prepared by Peter Moody, was dominant favourite in markets for Saturday’s $275,000 Group 3 Queen Of The South Stakes (1600m).
The mile feature was just her third run back from a nearly two year stint on the sidelines after she suffered a nasty injury in late 2015.
Prior to the setback, Amelie’s Star enjoyed four straight wins including the Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality (2400m) at Rosehill, which had her being spruiked for a Caulfield Cup campaign.
Improving each run this campaign, the mare was back in winning form saluting for the punters in the Queen Of The South Stakes ahead of a possible trip to Queensland to chase the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival riches.
She was ridden to perfection by Damian Lane in the Morphettville Group 2, settling back off the speed set by Sought After who pressed forward to lead from the flying Sue Jaensch-trained Domesday four-year-old Have Another Glass.
Lane meanwhile had Amelie’s Star tracking back fourth last waiting to make a move once on the home turn.
On the straight Have Another Glass, chasing a fifth win on the trot, was closing hard on the outside while the market mover Miles Of Krishan was also coming out wide with a late run.
Another Weir-trained runner, Ma Jones coming off successive Victorian wins, was also in the mix getting into the clear before her better fancied stablemate started to dig deep with 200m to go.
In a powerful finish, Amelie’s Star charged home to beat Have Another Glass, while Miles Of Krishan rounded out the Queen Of The South Stakes trifecta.
Weir has Amelie’s Star nominated for a possible May 20 run in Brisbane’s $650,000 Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m).
