This weekend at Morphettville Racecourse a smart line-up of staying fillies face off in the 2017 Auraria Stakes, betting tips and the latest odds on the Australasian Oaks lead-up found below.
The field is down to 17 starters with a number of pre-race scratchings, the $120,000 Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) due to run as the Schweppervescence Stakes (Race 7).
Darren Weir’s widely-drawn daughter of Not A Single Doubt Kenedna is the clear favourite in the latest Auraria Stakes betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
She has strong Melbourne form from the autumn including a Group 3 win at Flemington and Group 2 placing behind I Am A Star, plus the filly took out the Listed Laelia Stakes (1600m) at Morphettville last start.
Kenedna may have a wide alley to overcome, but she is at $3.60 and firming to get the job done and remain undefeated at the Morphettville track.
Her biggest danger according to the Auraria Stakes odds at $5 is the Kiwi visitor Savvy Dreams on debut down under with Paul Gatt to ride.
Savvy Dreams was last seen finishing third to subsequent ATC Oaks champ Bonneval in the Group 1 NZ Derby (2400m) across the Tasman, form that could now stack-up again during the Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival.
So will the two best in betting run the quinella or is there an upset Auraria Stakes result pending from the likes of the Laelia Stakes runner-up With A Bit Of Dash ($14) who gets the rails run on Saturday or fellow local hope Pretty Punk ($7)?
The New Zealand-trained three-year-olds have done nothing but step-up to the mark in the Sydney staying races over the autumn and so tipping that to continue in Adelaide with the pre-post Australasian Oaks favourite. All reports from the team are she travelled very well and impressed jockey Gatt in a piece of work this week. Drawn a treat, has the NZ Oaks third form and should relish this distance first-up.
Local Rebel Raider filly is bred to stay, prepared at Morphettville by Leon Macdonald & Andrew Gluyas. She has competitive Victorian form from the spring including her Geelong Classic third to Captain Duffy over 2200m and was doing good work late from a wide barrier for the fourth to Kenedna in the Laelia Stakes last time out. She’ll be the improver out of that race and has winning form over this track / distance so one to watch out for at a firming price.
Weir could be in for a big weekend and his proven Morphettville performer is deserving favourite based on what she’s been doing this campaign. Hasn’t finished worse than third since mid-January, is a Group 3 winner at Flemington and the Laelia Stakes win over the mile was strong enough to suggest a further 200m won’t be too far out of her reach this weekend. Just needs luck from the gate so a lot is up to jockey John Allen who retains the ride.
