Private Secretary Flashes Home to Win Magic Millions Fillies & Mares

Private Secretary has produced a huge turn of foot in the final straight at the Gold Coast to post a career-best win in the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares (1300m) this afternoon.

The start Magic Millions Plate was delayed briefly as Private Secretary was re-shoed and the mare appeared to be up against in from the outset when only fair from the barriers and forced to settle off the pace of Egyptian Symbol and Frill Seeking.

Wide and off the pace as the field rounded onto the final straight, jockey Ben Melham was forced to bide his time, but was greeted with a scintillating turn of foot when he asked for an extra effort and was a passenger as the seven-year-old swallowed up her rivals; bobbing at the right time to beat I Am Zelady on the line.

An emotional Greg Hickman was on hand for Private Secretary’s return to winning form in the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares and was understandably thrilled with the mare’s performance.

“Before the other people went up and thought that they’d won and I thought, well I don’t know, and then they put the replay up and she had,” Hickman said after the race.

“Everything has gone well and I’ve been happy with her preparation and yes we do need a bit of luck.

“She’s travelled here, there and everywhere and I’m just happy that she’s been able to do it.”

Private Secretary has not been far off the mark since she resumed for a smart third in the Group 3 Sensis Stakes (1100m) at Flemington on Derby Day; running a close second in the Listed Colin McAlpine Classic (1200m) on November 26th and trialling well in the lead-up to this afternoon’s $600,000 win.

Winner of the race in 2016, I Am Zelady appeared to have successfully defended her title in the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares this afternoon and was gallant in second, while long-odds runner Bidii Babe rounded out the minors.
