One of five Group 1 races slated for Saturday, Sydney is host to the Spring Champion Stakes 2016 at Royal Randwick and betting tips for the three-years-old clash are detailed below.
The last of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival elite levels, this weekend’s $500,000 Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) features a final field of 11 and Yankee Rose is the $2.50 at Ladbrokes.com.au to make history.
No filly has won the Spring Champion Stakes since it first ran in 1971, but money is on the David Vandyke-trained Yankee Rose to buck the trend on the back of her second in last weekend’s Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) at the track.
So will Yankee Rose get the job done for the punters or is the $4 Spring Champion Stakes odds on offer for the James Cummings-trained Champagne Stakes winner Prized Icon worth taking?
Earlier in the week we published our comprehensive 2016 Spring Champion Stakes Form Guide & Betting Preview and based on the facts and stats uncovered, below are our tips on the feature.
1st
#11 Yankee Rose ($2.50)
History says she won’t, but the form around Yankee Rose is too good not to take for her to break the fillies’ drought in this. She’s warming up for a tough go around in the Cox Plate and has been doing plenty right this time in. A Group 1 winner at the track in the autumn, she’s on a quick back-up after the eye-catching Flight Stakes second here last Saturday, but the extra metres should suit. Barrier eight at Randwick is ideal as well.
2nd
#1 Prized Icon ($4)
Price is drifting on this Group 1 winning More Than Ready colt, but he is well tried and the 2000m look his go after his last start third in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m). Was only a quarter-length off the winner in that traditional Spring Champion lead-up and doesn’t need to improve much to turn the tables. He was luckless and the third was awarded after a successful protest, so from gate four with the right run he’s right in this.
3rd
#5 Honeywine ($12)
Double-figures offered for the official Gloaming Stakes runner-up who hasn’t won over further than 1500m, but looks to be travelling like a stayer in the making who will appreciate the 2000m and possibly beyond. Barrier two has produced its fair share of winners in this race and in an open field he is a good a top three hope as any of them.
