First Seal was unlucky to miss the entire Spring Carnival through injury and interestingly drifted in Millie Fox Stakes betting markets leading up to jump, but completed a good jump and settled in prime position from the outset.

Sitting off the fair tempo set by early leaders Skyline Blush and Press Report, the Fastnet Rock mare steadily pressed wide and forward rounding onto the final straight and was immediately kicked into gear when offered a clear passage.

Charging forward, First Seal accelerated past Catkins and opened a lead; sustaining to the line well to see off late efforts from Telepathic and I’ve Got The Looks.

Trainer John Thompson was thrilled with First Seal’s return for success in the Millie Fox Stakes and revealed the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) will figure as her next point of call.

“It’s a relief, but very good,” Thompson said.

“We had a chat before the race and said don’t panic – just ride her to hit the line.

“We know she’ll improve off the back of this run. I have to say I was a bit worried at the 800m because I didn’t think we’d get that far back.

“She’ll definitely got to the Canterbury Stakes and we’ll let what she does there decide her next target after that.

“We’ll get through today and I guarantee she’ll improve. She’s had a long time off and she’s a big, gross mare.”

Blake Shinn delivered a gem of a ride aboard First Seal in the Millie Fox Stakes and extended his record to four wins and two minors through the six starts he’s had on the talented four-year-old.
