Eight smart stayers face off in Saturday’s Sandown feature the Zipping Classic 2015, betting tips for the weight-for-age showdown found below.
Due to jump as Sandown Race 5 at 3:25pm (AEST) as the highlight on an all-black type nine-race program, this year’s $300,000 Group 2 Quayclean Zipping Classic (2400m) might have a small field but the quality is top notch.
Four in the line-up are under double figures for the win in the latest Zipping Classic odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, who are offering Best Tote or SP + 20% on the race before jump on the weekend.
Current $3.20 favourite is Dandino from the Melbourne Cup winning stables of Darren Weir, the 2013 Caulfield Cup runner-up coming off a Group 3 Queen’s Cup (2600m) win at Flemington just seven days earlier on Saturday.
He is followed closely by former ATC Oaks winning mare Rising Romance for David Hayes & Tom Dabernig, the now five-year-old daughter of Ekraar catching the eye on Victoria Derby Day with her second in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m).
The next best in Zipping Classic betting are Chris Waller’s proven two-miler Who Shot Thebarman ($5) coming off an unplaced Melbourne Cup run after his third in the ‘race that stops a nation’ in 2014 and the market mover Tall Ship ($6) who also represents the Ballarat-based Weir.
So will the favourites run the first four or is there an upset Zipping Classic result on the cards from the likes of Kirramosa?
1st
#6 Rising Romance ($3.50)
This year’s Melbourne Cup was run at a slow pace and chances are there will be a lack of speed in this race as well. That is going to suit runners with a nice turn of foot and if any of the stayers in this field have that it is this five-year-old mare. She has a good record over the distance (4-1-2-0) and was eye-catching in her fast-finishing Mackinnon second at WFA last time out. She has won only once since the 2014 ATC Oaks over the mile and a half in Sydney but looks like she’s found form again and the right ride from Damian Lane could see her break the drought in good company.
2nd
#1 Dandino ($3.20)
This veteran nine-year-old is showing off his evergreen status this campaign with the Geelong Cup second and the consolation prize of a Queen’s Cup win after being balloted out of the Melbourne Cup. He’s in flying form and on the quick back-up after the easy win last week. Drops in distance so should have this run in him. Will get things his way from gate four and Dwayne Dunn replaces Ben Melham in the saddle for the first time, so if he can work out the right way to ride this Dansili stallion the chance of back-to-back wins in seven days is there.
3rd
#4 Tall Ship ($6)
Weir also saddles-up this imported Sea The Stars gelding who was fourth to subsequent Emirates Stakes winner Turn Me Loose in the Seymour Cup before an eighth over 1800m on Melbourne Cup Day beaten under three lengths. Goes up notably in weight at WFA this weekend, but it is a small field and he’s got a good draw with Brad Rawiller retaining the ride.
