Former star juvenile Lake Geneva was finally in black-type winning form last time out and shoots for another Spring win in Thursday’s Gucci Stakes 2015 at Flemington Racecourse, but has work to do from a wide draw in the Crown Oaks Day support act.
Due to jump as Flemington Race 4 at 2:00pm (AEST), this year’s $200,000 Group 3 Gucci Stakes (1100m) features a bumper field of 19 three-year-old fillies set to face off in the sprint clash.
Nearly half of those come off a win as last year’s Gucci Stakes winner Onemorezeta did when saluting with Damien Oliver aboard for her final run that prep, including the Team Hawkes-trained Lake Geneva.
The daughter of Fastnet Rock was one of last season’s best two-year-olds running third in both the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) in Melbourne and the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) in Sydney during the autumn.
She didn’t break her maiden status until her first-up victory over 1000m at Hawkesbury in early August and then she won again with a narrow but gutsy victory in the Listed Crockett Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day in her Melbourne debut.
On Thursday she has second Victorian start in the Gucci Stakes down the Flemington straight, but will need to be improving to salute from barrier 13 of 19 with Ryan Moore in the saddle.
Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes also have fellow last start winners Zara Bay in her first Melbourne assignment and Minetti who ran second at the track on debut in May jumping from barriers seven and nine respectively.
Also out wide in Thursday’s Gucci Stakes field are the likes of the John O’Shea-trained Group 3 winner Ottoman (15) who beat home third-placed Lake Geneva in the Percy Sykes Stakes in April, recent Group 3 Champagne Stakes winning Reward For Effort filly Take Pride (16) who comes off a fifth in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) and another Godolphin runner Antelucan (17) who won on this day 12 months ago.
Drawn far better in barrier five with top hoop Craig Williams in the saddle is David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Exceed And Excel filly Miss Idyllic who saluted over 1000m at Moonee Valley on October 23.
Fourth to Antelucan in the Group 3 on Crown Oaks Day last Melbourne Cup Carnival, Miss Idyllic is back in Group company for the first time in 12 months and looks a livewire hope over the distance.
Also coming off a nice lead-up run and drawn one closer to the rails on Thursday is the Mick Price-trained Secret Agenda in gate four with last year’s winning hoop Oliver aboard.
A winner of two of her five starts to date, Not A Single Doubt filly Secret Agenda comes off back-to-back Melbourne seconds firstly in the Group 3 behind Take Pride and then in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes (1200m) behind Serene Majesty on October 10.
Other notable Gucci Stakes hopes this week include Kris Lees’ last start Wyong winner Riapinka having just her fourth career start and Miss Gidget out to atone for her ninth in the Crocket Stakes last time out.
