A line-up of smart three-year-old fillies will face off in Saturday’s Furious Stakes 2015 at Royal Randwick, betting tips for the Chelmsford Stakes Day support act detailed below.
Running as Randwick Race 4 (2:30pm), this year’s edition of the $175,000 Group 2 Coolmore Furious Stakes (1200m) features a final field of 10 fillies many heading towards the $500,000 Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) on Epsom Handicap Day, October 3.
The clear favourite and early market mover in the Furious Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au backed in from $3 to $2.70 to post back-to-back wins is the Gai Waterhouse-trained Speak Fondly.
Drawn midfield in gate five with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle, the Northern Meteor filly won the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) at the same track and distance with the same hoop aboard first-up on August 22 and is after another win after taking that out by a tidy one and a quarter lengths.
The other best fancied fillies in the Furious Stakes betting markets this Sydney Spring Racing Carnival are Waterhouse’s Golden Slipper runner-up English ($4) who returns to racing on Saturday, Peter & Paul Snowden’s Fastnet Rock filly Serene Majesty ($7) coming off a five and a quarter length Canterbury win from last month and the John O’Shea-trained Ottoman ($7) who won the Group 3 Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m) back in April.
So will the best in betting be best over the line on race day or is there an upset Furious Stakes result on the cards in Sydney on the weekend?
While the bookies’ money is on the other Waterhouse-runner in this field, the Golden Slipper form of English is too good to ignore. The daughter of Encosta De Lago showed class as a juvenile with a Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) win at this track and distance before the Slipper second. Her last start was a sixth in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) but that was a step up in distance at the end of a prep. She’ll be better fresh this weekend and the distance looks ideal.
Third in the Blue Diamond, third in the Golden Slipper, third last time out in the Silver Shadow. This daughter of Fasnet Rock knows how to run a Group place but her only win to date was first-up at Hawkesbury in non-black type company. She’ll come close again based on what she’s shown she is capable of, with four third place finishes from as many starts over the distance. A wider drawn out in nine for her and Tommy Berry to overcome and looks the best place chance by far looking at statistics alone.
Adding the value to the trifecta is Clarry Conners’ I Am Invincible filly who has had nine starts to date making her one of the most experienced in the field. Won the Group 2 BTC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) during the winter and was last seen running third to Press Statement in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) at Doomben. Press Statement ran second first-up in the Run To The Rose and this filly can further frank the JJ Atkins form with a good run here from her nice barrier two draw.
