Brilliant mare Srikandi kept her unbeaten record at the Gold Coast intact today with a dominant win in the Group 1 $500,000 Sky Racing Tattersall’s Club Tiara (1400m).
The Ciaron Maher trained Srikandi broke through for her maiden Group 1 win in the $2m AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) at Doomben a fortnight ago and made it back to back Group 1 wins today.
Srikandi made light of the outside barrier in the fifteen horse field and after beginning quickly Kerrin McEvoy let the mare slide over in front of the field and took up the running approaching the first turn at the 900m mark.
From then McEvoy dictated the tempo and after giving Srikandi a little breather mid race had plenty in reserve to power away in the straight.
In the run to the line the $4.20 favourite scored a clear one length win over the consistent Avoid Lightning ($7.50) with Lumosty ($6) a further four and a half lengths away in third spot.
The disappointment of the race was the Chris Waller trained Catkins ($5) who settled near the tail of the field for Hugh Bowman, but had too much work to do in the straight and finished in sixth spot.
Maher said that the Tattersall’s Club Tiara was always a part off the Srikandi’s Queensland Winter Carnival program and the fact that it was being run at the Gold Coast this year because Eagle Farm was still out of play because of reconstruction works, only made it more enticing.
“We programmed the five races up here for her Winter campaign, with the four Group 1s and to be able to secure two of them it is just unbelievable,”
Maher said.
“She showed that when she came through the Stradbroke, she came through the run great.”
“He coat had even come on, her weight was very similar and I just give her a couple of easy gallops.”
“She go the track again today. She was really sharp from the barrier, which was sort of the key to the race.”
“Kerrin McEvoy, a super ride again.”
Srikandi has been to the Gold Coast on three occasions now for three victories and as well as her win today, won the Listed $150,000 Turangga Farm Silk Stocking (1200m) during the 2014 Winter Carnival and then kicked off her 2015 Winter campaign here with a win in the Group 2 $200,000 SMEG Victory Stakes (1200m).
