This year’s $200,000 Group 2 Race-Tech Australia Caulfield Autumn Classic (1800m) runs as Race 4 at 3:15pm (AEDT) with betting on the race through Ladbrokes.com.au firmly led by market mover Alpine Eagle at $2.30 in from $2.50.
Tony McEvoy’s High Chaparral colt is up in class here for his black type debut after winning three of his four starts to date, most recently over 1600m at home at Morphettville on February 14.
Proven up to a mile then he steps out over further for the first time here for his first run in stakes company and his first run in Melbourne.
The other major players in Autumn Classic betting markets are Moonee Valley Vase winner Moonovermanhattan ($7.50), Autumn Stakes third past the post last time out Firehouse Rock ($8), his stablemate Hong Kong Captain ($8) also representing Lindsay Park and the in-form Minnesinger ($9) shooting for a third straight win.
With so many single figure hopefuls below are the Races.com.au team’s insider Autumn Classic tips, sorting the pretenders from the genuine contenders.
1st
#10 Minnesinger ($9)
Gun barrier three draw for this Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Lonhro colt who the stable has been singing praises. Dwayne Dunn has the ride again after winning on him over 1600m at Sandown-Lakeside last time out on February 4, the youngster’s second win from four career starts. Missed a lead-up run into this so is in stakes company for the first time but think from the draw he’ll be up on the speed and, with the right run, hard to hold out.
2nd
#13 Betsy ($18)
At close to $20 this Peter Moody-trained Redoute’s Choice filly is nice value to make a successful step up to Group class here after three promising runs to kick off her career. She had two of those last season for a win on debut at Cranbourne then a second in a Morphettville black type over a mile during a trip to Adelaide. She returned on January 31 and finished fourth first-up but getting out over the extra metres here is going to suit as will barrier two, top hoop Craig Williams riding and the 55kg under set weights.
3rd
#5 Alpine Eagle ($2.30)
Race favourite and deserves to have money on them, but not at the $2.30 firming price. Is the market mover and comes off back-to-back wins but needs to handle a class rise. Also racing outside of Adelaide for just the second time, the other run at Hawkesbury when suffering his only defeat to date. A few questions then but does need to be included in trifecta betting.
