The feature race for three-year-olds this weekend is the Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m), with betting tips set out below.
It may just be a Group Three race, but the Caulfield Classic is offering up a lucrative $750,000 in prize-money, which means it has attracted a classy field of horses.
There are 13 runners on the field for Saturday’s Caulfield Cup Day supporting race, running as Race 4 at 2:35pm (AEDT).
Six of the runners are currently offering single figure odds in the 2014 Caulfield Classic betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au, which means the race is wide open for a winner. Kumaon is the favourite at a price of $3.90 though Merion has seen money coming in, with his price shortening from $6 to $4.80.
The John O’Shea-trained Kumaon will enjoy an ideal start from barrier three with champion jockey Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle. He’s enjoyed a busy spring racing campaign thus far with three placings to his name but has faltered when stepped up in class to Group One. He has yet to win a race this season but punters believe the Caulfield Classic is his shot.
Merion meanwhile will start wide in barrier 10 with Steven Arnold in the saddle. He enjoyed a win last month in the Listed Living Legends Stakes (1400m) and was a fast-finishing sixth last time out in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m).
The other four runners offering single figure odds are: Bachman, Magicool, and Crafty all at $6.50 followed by Fontein Ruby at $9.50.
Don’t forget to take advantage of Ladbrokes.com.au Caulfield Classic Promo. The online bookmaker is offering Best Tote or SP + 20%, which means you’ll get an additional 20% on your winnings!
With so many runners offering good odds, below are our tips for the 2014 Caulfield Classic to help you get an idea of who to back this Saturday.
#1 Kumaon ($3.90)
The Godolphin colt is the market mover of the betting market, seeing his price shorten from $4.60 to $3.90 due to plenty of support. Has had plenty of practice this spring with five starts, all black type races, however this could also burn him out especially considering he is backing up from the Caulfield Guineas last Saturday. Is a serial placer with six total from his nine career starts but has had trouble winning races, so he should at least finish in the money. Was a fast-finishing fourth in the Guineas, missing out on a placing by just a neck. Will get an ideal start from barrier three.
#6 War Point ($15)
Is in-form following one win, one second, and three third placings from his six career starts but this will be his first step up in class to black type racing. Looks likely to enjoy the increase in distance following a fast-finishing third in the Listed UCI Stakes (1800m) last time out. Will need to overcome a wide start from barrier 11 however.
#4 Magicool ($6.50)
This gelding has won two of his four career starts, including a strong win last time out in the UCI Stakes, which means he’ll easily step up the extra 200m of the Classic. Glen Boss believes Magicool is a real stayer and has been doing everything right since his last start win. Is outperforming all other horses in trainer Mark Kavanagh’s stable. In-form and searching for a win ahead of the Victoria Derby.
