Joe Pride’s flying sprinter Tiger Tees is out to retain an undefeated new season record as the top rated acceptor for Saturday’s Tramway Stakes 2014 at Royal Randwick Racecourse.
One of three Group 2 highlights on the Sydney program for the weekend, this year’s $175,000 Tattersalls Club Tramway Stakes (1400m) has attracted a final field of 16 hopefuls.
Heading the field and the weights with 58kg is Group 1 The Galaxy winner Tiger Tees coming off back-to-back wins this time in.
Drawn in barrier 11 with a jockey still to be confirmed, the Dubawi seven-year-old enjoyed a first-up Flemington win in the Group 3 Aurie’s Star Handicap (1200m) on August 9 before backing up a fortnight later at Randwick.
At the same track he sees on Saturday Tiger Tees enjoyed a one and a quarter length win over Chris Waller’s Royal Descent with Criterion in third, those two backing up in the Chelmsford Stakes over a mile on Saturday, in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m).
A known mudlark he will relish a soft track on the weekend having produced great form on both Slow (5-3-0-1) and Heavy (4-2-1-0) tracks, but also won the Aurie’s Star on a Good (3) so has the ability to handle all types of ground.
There are then two other last start winners in the Tramway Stakes field with the resuming Rising Romance and the in-form My Sabeel drawn in barriers nine and 10 respectively.
Donna Logan’s visiting Kiwi mare Rising Romance is one of the top early fancies at Ladbrokes.com.au for the $3 million Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 18 paying $17 as the equal favourite with Japanese raider Bande, Makybe Diva’s close relation La Amistad and Melbourne Cup top fancy The Offer for Gai Waterhouse.
The Ekraar mare has Group 1 form both at home in New Zealand as well as in Sydney, most recently beating home a field of fellow fillies in her final run as a three-year-old in Randwick’s Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) back in April.
She’s had one Warwick Farm trial since but is yet to win first-up and is likely looking for more ground.
My Sabeel meanwhile has been making a name for herself progressing through the ranks over the past few months.
Kevin Moses’s Savabele seven-year-old most recently stepped back up to black-type company at Randwick on August 23 and relished a Heavy (10) track to beat home Bennetta by an easy four and a half lengths in the Group 3 Toy Show Quality (1300m).
With six of the nine Chelmsford Stakes acceptors, Waller also has three runners in the Tramway this weekend saddling up the resuming Queensland derby third placed Vilanova (barrier seven), French import Weary (barrier two) up to a mile for the first time since this Doncaster Mile third and Danchai with the rails run from barrier one.
Also with a trio of Tramway Stakes acceptors are then Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes.
Team Hawkes will be represented by Epsom Handicap-bound Toydini (barrier 14), Group 2 winner Ninth Legion (barrier six) out to improve on a first-up seventh at the track behind Terravista and consistent staying type Zephyron with the outside barrier 16 to overcome.
Other notable Tramway Stakes hopes then include the John Sargent-trained Crown Oaks winner Kirramosa (barrier 13) coming off a first-up sixth in the Missile Stakes and Kris Lees’ fellow Group 1 winning mare Lucia Valentina (barrier five) who won the Vinery Stud Stakes last April before her ATC Oaks third to Rising Romance.
