David Lawlor’s in-form three-year-old Architect has suffered an early blow for their 2014 Sunshine Coast Guineas bid this Saturday coming up with a nasty wide gate for the Corbould Park showdown.
The sole Group race on the card at Caloundra, this year’s $125,000 Group 3 XXXX Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) has attracted a full field of 18 starters and three emergencies.
To wear the No. 1 saddlecloth is Lawlor’s Bel Esprit gelding Architect who comes off a 1200m handicap win at Eagle Farm from last Saturday.
While their lead-up form is good, Architect will have their work cut out for them having drawn barrier 17 and coming up to the mile here.
They and jockey Tim Bell will only come into 16 if all the emergencies come out too meaning they have work to do early.
Other notable hopes with wide barriers to overcome in the Guineas include the Rob Heathcote-trained Hopfgarten (barrier 16), Anymore (barrier 20) and L’Entrecote (barrier 18) for Kelly Schweida.
Mossman gelding Hopfgarten was in ace form earlier this autumn – winter season winning a string of races before their four-straight streak came to an end in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) where they ran 14th to Havana.
They improved on June 7 when fourth in the Listed Daybreak Lover Stakes (1600m) and do have winning form over the mile in the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) at Eagle Farm from April.
Lacey Morrison’s Toowoomba-based All Bar One gelding Anymore meanwhile comes off a run at Ipswich from a fortnight ago where they crossed fourth to Olympic Anthem, a race Architect ran second in.
L’Entrecote then will be ridden by Jim Byrne from their widest barrier draw of the year, the Brisbane galloper having had gate three when sixth to Olympic Gold at Ipswich last start.
There are only two other confirmed starters coming off a win along with Architect meanwhile.
They are the Craig Smith-trained Performia (barrier five) who took out a Benchmark 70 over 1400m at Dalby on June 15 and the flying Len Treloar-trained Coruba Queen (barrier nine.
To be ridden by apprentice hoop Geoffrey Goold, Warhead filly Coruba Queen shoots for her fourth win from as many starts this time in.
She won two on the trot here at the Sunshine Coast over 1300m and 1400m respectively before going to Doomben on June 18 to win a fillies-and-mares’ Class 3 over 1350m by three quarters of a length.
Coruba Queen makes her Black Type debut here but the form suggests she’ll handle the class rise according to her trainer.
“She has been an interesting filly,” Treloar said this week.
“The Guineas on Saturday over a mile is a good opportunity just to see where she is at the moment, but she is certainly a filly that has come a long way in a short period of time in terms of ability and especially her mental approach to racing.”
