Chris Waller-trained Brigantin will have the opportunity to turn-the-tables on Midsummer Sun in the Listed Australia Day Cup (2100m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday.
Midsummer Sun recorded the first victory of his summer campaign in the Listed Gosford Cup (2100m) on January 10 and the duo have both been included in the nominations for the feature race in Sydney this weekend.
Midsummer Sun started his preparation with a seventh place finish behind Strike The Stars in the City Tattersalls Club Handicap (1400m) and returned to his best form with a strong second place finish behind Salon Soldier in the Listed Visit Victoria Plate (1800m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.
The Monsun gelding finished a credible fourth in the Group 2 Zipping Classic (2400m) at Caulfield on November 16 and was fifth in the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) on Boxing Day before scoring his breakthrough win in the Gosford Cup.
Brigantin failed to fire during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, while under the care of Pat Carey, but has found his best form since joining the stable of leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller in November.
The Cozzene entire had his first start for his new stable with a fair fifth behind Messene in the December Handicap (1550m) and hit the line strongly when second behind Midsummer Sun in the Gosford Cup.
Brigantin will relish the step-up to 2400 metres in the Australia Day Cup and is expected to be well-supported to record his maiden race win in Australia this weekend.
The imported galloper will be joined in the field by stablemate I’m Imposing who is also backing up from the Gosford Cup.
I’m Imposing, who was imported from England by leading owner Lloyd Williams in 2010, ended a lengthy losing streak with a victory in the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) at Royal Randwick on Boxing Day following a 2013 Spring Racing Carnival campaign where he was competitive at the highest level of racing – finishing second in the Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality (2400m) and seventh in the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m).
The Chris Waller-trained stayer upset Travolta in the Summer Cup, but the Gai Waterhouse-trained galloper will have the opportunity to turn-the-tables on I’m Imposing in the Australia Day Cup this weekend.
Travolta recorded his first race win in almost a year when he took out the Listed ATC Cup (2000m) at Rosehill Gardens on November 30 and has been narrowly denied wins in both the Summer Cup and the Listed Tattersalls Club Cup.
Stablemate Rule Book has also been included in the Australia Day Cup nominations, while last start winner Big Memory, Troy Portelli-trained Handsome and Bagot Handicap winner Outback Joe are also a chance to contest the race.
The Australia Day Cup final field will be released on Wednesday and the best odds will be found at Ladbrokes.com.au.
