As is the case with the colts’ and geldings’ equivalent on Saturday, Doomben’s Calaway Gal Stakes 2013 betting markets are dominated by an odds-on favourite.
The Danny Bougoure-trained Oakleigh Girl has unsurprisingly opened in the red to win the $100,000 Listed Channel Seven Calaway Gal Stakes (1010m) in the lead up to next month’s 2014 Magic Millions 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast.
Stakes racing in Brisbane this weekend kicks off with Race 3 at 1:40pm where the two-year-old males face off in the $100,000 Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1010m).
There it is the widely-drawn Vienna Royale, out to become just the fourth horse in the past three years to win at Doomben over 1010m from gate 11, who is odds-on at $1.75 to win.
They are an $11 futures chances for the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) in early markets led by $5 favourite Oakleigh Girl.
The nicely-bred daughter of Snitzel gets a chance to secure her spot at the top of the Magic Millions odds when she has her second career start in Saturday’s Calaway Gal Stakes.
She blitzed her debut by one and a quarter lengths at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day taking out the Group 3 7News Stakes (1000m) in fine style.
Now she races at home in the sunshine state looking to go back-to-back, Oakleigh Girl paying $1.85 to beat home her 13 rivals in the fillies-only set weights clash.
Oakleigh Girl will be ridden by Michael Cahill, who also has the ride on Vienna Royale, and will jump from an ideal barrier three draw.
She’s followed in the Calaway Gal Stakes betting markets then by three other single figure chances with:
- #2 Totally Sure ($4.80) – Kelly Schweida’s Not A Single Doubt filly has had two previous starts before now, both at Doomben, the first was a good second over 1000m the other she saluted as the $1.26 shortie over 1100m from barrier one, that was on October 19 so she’s had a two month freshen-up and if they come back fitter and stronger could be a genuine danger from their nice barrier four draw with Ric McMahon aboard
- #7 Elitist ($6.50) – Gate 10 for Chris Munce’s mount to overcome here, the Kelso Wood-trained daughter of Stratum coming off her race debut at Eagle Farm from November 23 when third as the beaten odds-on favourite behind Divine Service, gets a chance to improve here and may like the Doomben track that little bit better
- #3 Ruby Soho ($7) – Liam Birchley-trained Publishing filly is third-up here after a third to Grapevine in October at Doomben and a second to Divine Service at Eagle Farm last start, form is there around the top fancies but Michael Cahill jumps off with Robert Thompson the replacement, will be up there with Oakleigh Girl (3) and Totally Sure (4) in gate five too
Other more notable fillies out to upset the favourite in the Calaway Gal this year then include Dane Shadow filly Shadow Doll ($15), first emergency Ambitious Blonde ($15) who earned a call-up following the early scratching of Ramblin’ Daisy and the second emergency Pure Diamond ($15) who is not yet assured of a run.
