There are two major 2013 Cox Plate Carnival jockey updates for this weekend with Glen Boss and Nick Hall both to miss out on their respective Group 1 rides at Moonee Valley Racecourse.
Hall was to have ridden the Robert Hickmott-trained Masked Marvel, one of three acceptances in the $3 million Group 1 Sportingbet Cox Plate (2040m) for Macedon Lodge, in the big one on Saturday.
Owner Lloyd Williams’ godson however will not be available for a shot at the weight-for-age classic due to suspension.
At a hearing today Hall’s 10 meeting careless riding suspension was varied and he can return on Sunday October 26.
It was not enough however for him to honour his Cox Plate ride with Michael Rodd the new jockey for Montjeu five-year-old Masked Marvel.
Last seen running second to Honorius when defeated just a long neck in the Group 3 Craven Plate (2000m) at Randwick on October 5, Masked Marvel is a $34 outsider in Cox Plate betting.
They will be joined in the field by their stablemates Green Moon ($17) to be ridden by Brett Prebble who was aboard for their Melbourne Cup victory last spring, and last start The Metropolitan champion Seville ($51) who is a Hugh Bowman mount.
Three time Melbourne Cup winning jockey Glen Boss meanwhile also misses his chance at adding more Group 1 gold to the cabinet this weekend having been in line for a shot at two elite levels over the Cox Plate Carnival.
Firstly Boss was engaged to partner the in-form Gary Portelli-trained Rebel Dane in Friday evening’s $1 million Group 1 Sportingbet Manikato Stakes (1200m) under the lights at the Valley.
California Dane four-year-old Rebel Dane is currently rated a $10 chance in Manikato Stakes markets which are led by Mick Price’s Moir Stakes winning mare Samaready ($2.70).
Drawn in gate nine they will now be ridden by Dwayne Dunn who replaces Boss after his appeal against a 12 meeting careless riding suspension was dismissed today.
The dismissal also sees Boss miss out on the chance to ride his Melbourne Cup 2013 tip Puissance De Lune, who he has ridden for all seven of their starts since last October, in the Cox Plate.
Trainer Darren Weir is yet to name a replacement rider for the Shamardal grey who was last seen running second to Happy Trails in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 5.
Even without a current jockey Puissance De Lune is one of the top fancies in Cox Plate betting after the withdrawal of former favourite Atlantic Jewel due to a tendon injury.
They pay $4.20 and trail only Underwood Stakes winning Kiwi It’s A Dundeel ($4).
