Post Barrier 2013 Stradbroke Handicap Betting – Two New Favourites

After drawing the second widest barrier for their grand final showdown at Eagle Farm this Saturday Peter Snowden’s Doomben 10,000 winner Epaulette has lost their position as the top fancy in the Stradbroke Handicap 2013 betting odds.

Your Song

Prior to the final acceptances and barrier draw for the $1.36 million Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1400m), running as Race 8 of 9 at Eagle Farm at 3:40pm (AEST) on Saturday, the Commands colt was at $5 to become a dual Group 1 winner during the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival.

Epaulette, who also won the Golden Rose in Sydney as a juvenile last spring, has since eased right out to $7 in the Stradbroke Handicap odds however after connections drew gate 22 of 23 for their hopeful to jump from.

If the five emergencies in the Stradbroke Handicap field fail to gain a start Epaulette will still have their work cut out for them from gate 17 of 18 carrying a hefty 56kg in the handicap clash.

The updated markets then are led by two big market movers with fellow three-year-olds Your Song and Sizzling firming in from $6 to $4.60 as the new Stradbroke Handicap co-favourites.

Anthony Cummings’ Fastnet Rock colt Your Song was heading earlier markets for Queensland’s richest race after their five length romp in the mud to beat a crack field in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) on May 11.

They didn’t handle a firmer Doomben track quite as well last time out however when barrier 15 of 15 got the better of them in the Doomben 10,000 where they finished four lengths away sixth to Epaulette.

Back at the roomier Eagle Farm course with its nice long straight, the likelihood of another soft track and their nice gate 11 draw with 54kg Your Song is being tipped as a big improver.

Sizzling meanwhile raced last Saturday at the track and distance, Kelso Wood’s in-form Snitzel colt taking out the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1400m).

In the Guineas they carried 57kg to victory from gate 11 and on Saturday they will relish a much lighter 52kg.

They didn’t have quite as much luck with the barriers however coming up with 18, top Brisbane hoop Chris Munce to maintain his association with Sizzling who was a Group 1 winner on Stradbroke Handicap Day 12 months ago taking out the TJ Smith.

Also on the second line of Stradbroke Handicap betting with Epaulette at $7 is then the other major three-year-old, Better Than Ready, who drew gate 19.

Despite the horror draw there’s still plenty to like about Kelly Schweida’s More Than Ready colt who was a competitive third in the BTC Cup.

The biggest thing in their favour is the 52.5kg weight after they carried 57kg when fifth last time out in the Doomben 10,000.

The only other runner in the capacity Stradbroke Handicap field and markets under double figures is then the Rob Heathcote-trained Buffering at $8.50 who came up trumps with barrier five (possibly into three) for Group 1 start number 16.

Could this finally be the honest Mossman five-year-olds’ chance at taking home the trophy instead of playing the bridesmaid in yet another elite level?

Other notable hopes at more generous Stradbroke Handicap prices then include Luskin Star winning four-year-old Fontelina ($15) who has a sweet gate four draw, Guy Walter’s multiple Group 1 winning mare Streama ($16) racing for the first time since her Doncaster Mile fourth, Kelso Wood’s last start Group 3 BRC Sprint winner Belltone ($16) and Heathcote’s only Group 1 winner (Toorak Handicap) to date Solzhenitsyn ($17) coming off a Doomben win in the Group 3 Lord Mayor’s Cup (1600m).
