Orbit Express wins Race 9 at Flemington on Super Saturday
Conditions were perfect for seven-year-old Dangerous gelding Orbit Express who was at his absolute best over 1400m at his home track, winning Flemington Race 9 as a $13 outsider in the betting.
Danzylum from barrier two shared the lead early with race favourite, the Mark Kavanagh-trained Undeniably, the duo setting a frantic pace.
The Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained mare Red Flair found a good run in third while after an awkward jump, the Peter Snowden-trained Offenders eventually made up ground to move into fourth by the turn for home.
In a thrilling run down the Flemington straight, last-start winner of the Mannerism Stakes Red Flair took the lead before Orbit Express and jockey Steven King put down the challenge.
On the line Orbit Express came home the better after a sensational late charge beating home Red Flair for the win.
The eye-catcher was without doubt the Peter Moody-trained Set For Fame, the Reset mare coming from the back of the field right up into third place in the final stages with a gutsy run.
After Kavanagh enjoyed a brilliant win with Shocking in the Australian Cup earlier, Undeniably was the real disappointment of race nine fading badly to finish well back and proving themselves to be a 1100 – 1200m sprinter not having run a strong 1400m today.
Orbit Express has now won 12 of his 51 career starts, today’s victory pushing his earnings to around the $600,000 mark.
