Black Caviar has been allocated the 58kg top weight for the 2011 Newmarket Handicap
The 2011 Newmarket Handicap, one of two Group 1 showdowns on the card for Flemington’s Super Saturday of Racing on March 12, is set to feature a star-studded field with Peter Moody’s unbeaten mare Black Caviar the red hot favourite to win.
Despite having been allocated a hefty 58kg to carry in the Newmarket, Black Caviar remains odds-on at $1.35 in the Newmarket Handicap odds at Luxbet.
A weight carrying record would have to be broken by Black Caviar in the Newmarket as the only top-weighted mare to win the race to date was Maybe Mahal who carried 56.5kg to victory back in 1978.
We have to go back to 1991 to find the last Newmarket Handicap winner who had 58kg on their back, Shaftsbury Avenue the only runner in the past five decades to cart this weight to a win in the Newmarket.
Moody is yet to confirm whether he will run the freakishly talented four-year-old in the Newmarket this year, where Black Caviar would be vying to extend her succession of wins to 10.
Black Caviar has to date won all nine of her race starts, the most weight she has carried to victory so far being 57.5kg in the Listed Blue Sapphire Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield in May 2009.
Her Newmarket Handicap weight is the same the legendary Makybe Diva carried to her third straight Melbourne Cup success in 2005.
Black Caviar is equal first in the Newmarket Handicap order of entry along with the David Hayes-trained Eagle Falls who has been allocated 55kg.
Hussonet five-year-old Eagle Falls came right into Newmarket Handicap contention on Saturday with a brilliant win in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) at Caulfield carrying 2kg more than his weight for the Newmarket.
Luxbet have Eagle Falls as an $18 shot in their Newmarket betting.
Twelve months ago Eagle Falls ran fifth in the Oakleigh Plate before finishing a close second to Wanted in the 2010 Newmarket Handicap carrying 52.5kg.
Following Black Caviar the next heaviest weighted Newmarket hopeful is Hay List with 56.5kg.
Boom galloper Hay List has twice faced the queen on the track, most recently running a distant second behind Black Caviar in the weight-for-age Group 1 Lightning Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on February 19.
However, if they are both accepted for the Newmarket Handicap field Hay List would meet Black Caviar 3.5kg better in the weights for the first time.
Hay List is the $12 second elect in the Newmarket Handicap betting at Luxbet followed by Star Witness at $14.
Dual Group 1 winning colt Star Witness is the top-rated three-year-old among the 44 first acceptors for the Newmarket Handicap and has been allocated 53kg.
Danny O’Brien’s son of Starcraft Star Witness has been beaten just once down the Flemington straight when second to Black Caviar in the Group 1 Patinack Farm Classic (1200m) last November.
Star Witness would be carrying 1.5kg more than then three-year-old Wanted carried to victory in the Newmarket last year.
