Doomben 10,000 Betting 2017: Odds Update

It is one of the most open affairs in 2017 Doomben 10,000 betting in Brisbane this weekend, but it is the Group 1 winning colt Russian Revolution who remains clear favourite to add to his elite level tally.

A field of 15 do battle in Doomben Race 7 at 4:04pm (AEST) on Saturday in this year’s $700,000 Group 1 James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10,000 (1200m).

The reshuffle of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival this season has the race replacing the BTC Cup as the opening Group 1 over a decreased distance.

Now a genuine sprint affair, the bookies are tipping that to work in the favour of the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained three-year-old Russian Revolution.

Winner of the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill two back, the son of Snitzel sits top of the Doomben 10,000 odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3.20.

Drawn a treat in barrier five with Kerrin McEvoy continuing his association, Russian Revolution is out to atone for his failed sixth to Chautauqua in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m) on April 1.

He was impressive with a recent three length trial win over 1040m at Randwick though and looks back on track.

Three other sprinters follow at single-figures in the latest Doomben 10,000 betting markets including the defending champion Music Magnate ($6.50).

Twelve months ago the Bjorn Baker-trained Written Tycoon gelding took out the Group 1 when it was run a fortnight later over 1350m.

He’s got excellent form over the shorter 1200m distance however with four wins and three other minor placings from seven starts, including his lead-up success in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm on April 29.

Jeff Lloyd is in the saddle again on Saturday and Music Magnate could prove the one to beat once again going back-to-back in the winter weight-for-age feature.

Following closely at $7 is Russian Revolution’s stablemate Redzel ($7) who brings excellent form into the race.

Jumping from barrier three with Jim Byrne to ride, the Snitzel four-year-old ran a devastatingly close second in The Galaxy two back before winning the Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m) in the wet on April 15.

If the Doomben track remains wet for Doomben 10,000 Day that will suit known mudlark Redzel who has outstanding form on Heavy going (6-2-2-1).

Rounding out the single-figure fancies at $8.50 is Fell Swoop who is charged with overcoming barrier 14 of 15 on Saturday.

No Doomben 10,000 winner has jumped from wider than gate nine since Mr. Innocent (12 of 15 in 2000), a statistic that becomes even more telling with the drop in distance for the 2017 edition.

Matthew Dale’s perennial Group 1 placegetter Fell Swoop just can’t catch a break in elite company, but is a big place hope again coming off the third in the TJ Smith Stakes during ‘The Championships’.

See below for the updated Doomben 10,000 betting markets before heading to Ladbrokes.com.au to back your favourites at the right price.
