Former Kiwi trained Mongolian Wolf will now head to Brisbane for the Queensland Derby after winning the Group 3 $150,000 Mostyn Copper Group Frank Packer Plate (2000m) at Randwick today.
The former Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman trained Mongolian Wolf is now trained by leading Victoria trainer Darren Weir after the three year old gelding was purchased by Australian Bloodstock.
Mongolian Wolf performed up to pre-race expectations and will now head north for the Group 1 $600,000 Channel 7 Queensland Derby (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 10.
Winning jockey Brenton Avdulla settled Mongolian Wolf midfield and angled out wide in the straight after coming over the rise.
Avdulla was keen to get near the outside of the track on Mongolian Wolf ($6) who proved too strong for the Chris Waller trained Veladero ($7.50) with Screamer ($9) running a nice race for third.
“You can be full of confidence when you are riding a Darren Weir trained horse,” Avdulla said.
“He is a lovely add obviously they (Kiwis) have domninated our carnival.”
“I was always confident that I was on the right horse. I had a perfect run in transit, I got out when I wanted to.”
“The track is racing a bit inconsistent. The middle of the track, I didn’t really want to be there, in or out so I went wider up the running.”
“Nice horse and I am sure he is in for a good prep in Queensland.”
The Team Snowden trained Acatour was sent out the $2.10 favourite but struggled to make any impression in the straight from well back in the field under the hard riding from Blake Shinn to finish eighth.
