2016 Cox Plate Preview with Peter Moody

Ladbrokes Daily Wire features another special ‘Moody on the Mic’ edition this time the former gun horseman talking to the connections of the Cox Plate 2016 horses and hopefuls ahead of the Moonee Valley feature on Saturday.

Peter Moody saddled-up three runners in Australasia’s weight-for-age championship over his decades as a trainer, but the Cox Plate trophy eluded him.

This weekend’s edition of the $3 million Group 1 W.S. Cox Plate (2040m) is all about the reigning champion and Australia’s darling of the turf, Winx.

She is nearing odds-on territory in Cox Plate betting at Ladbrokes.com.au currently paying $2 to give the punters and the race goers what they want on Saturday – her 13th consecutive win and successful Cox Plate title defence.

Jockey Hugh Bowman spoke to Moody on Tuesday morning after Breakfast With the Best and was full of confidence heading into Saturday’s major.

“Very happy. Didn’t do a whole lot this morning, just more or less brought her out and stretched her legs. She was here on Saturday morning and worked in company, I liked what I felt,” he told the Daily Wire.

“The punters should go in with confidence.”

Moody also spoke to Winx’s owner Peter Tighe who admitted being associated with such a champion was numbing.

“It’s pretty numbing actually. It’s a great feeling, but numbing at the same time,” he said.

Also featured on the Ladbrokes Daily Wire special Cox Plate edition are Moody chats with a host of rival trainers looking to stop the dominance of Winx on Saturday including John O’Shea.

O’Shea saddles-up the most likely to score the upset Cox Plate result, Hartnell ($3.40), as well as Epsom Handicap winner Hauraki ($21).

“We’d be quite excited to win, it’s a big challenge but we’ll give it a crack,” he told Moody.

“Just the Valley [is the concern]. If it was at Flemington or Randwick we’d probably be a little bit confident, but the reality is she [Winx] looks to be very effective around the Valley and our blokes sort of need a big wide open space.”

Jockey James McDonald retains the ride on Hartnell after guiding him to victory in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) by the big margin at Flemington last time out, and isn’t conceding defeat just yet.

“He’s been going really good, but obviously a big stumbling block [Winx],” he told Moody.

“We’re in for a good show anyway so looking forward to the challenge.”

Out to make history is David Vandyke’s three-year-old filly Yankee Rose coming off the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) win in Sydney, and her trainer admitted to the Ladbrokes Daily Wire he’d be happy to just to finish in the Cox Plate trifecta.

“I think there’s been three three-year-olds tackle this race in the last 20 years and two of them ran a place so that’ll do us against these two champions, we’d be happy with third,” he told Moody.
