Closing the meeting as Caulfield Race 8 at 5:45pm (AEDT) at the mid-week Caulfield Cup Carnival race day, this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Nick Johnstone Real Estate Ladies’ Day Vase (1600m) has attracted a capacity field of 16 starters plus three emergencies.

Two runners in the mares’ only mile showdown are battling for top spot in the Ladies’ Day Vase odds at Ladbrokes.com.au with Euro Angel ($4.50) narrow favourite ahead of the second emergency Shillelagh ($4.60).

Dwayne Dunn is booked to ride the Team Hawkes-trained Rip Van Winkle four-year-old Euro Angel who is drawn double digits with barrier 12 – into 10 with emergencies out.

She comes off a second over 1400m at Warwick Farm from October 3 where she did plenty wrong, but still won by over a length carrying 59kg from the outside barrier (11 of 11).

Going up to 1600m, which she ran second in the Rivette Final over at Flemington in the winter under 60kg, she can improve sharply especially at set weights plus penalties dropping to just 55kg.

The bookies are also taking no chances with New Zealand raider Shillelagh prepared by Stephen Autridge & Jamie Richards, despite the Savabeel five-year-old not yet assured of a run.

She has had two runs down under both at Caulfield Racecourse this campaign including a 1440m win on October 1 defeating Sovereign Nation.

This is a step-up in class and she’s got the outside barrier if she gets in, but is still a danger.

Despite the size of the Ladies’ Day Vase field and betting markets, just two other mares are under double-figures for the win with Egypt ($7) and Gabella ($7.50).

Top Melbourne hoop Damien Oliver is booked to ride the Mark Kavanagh-trained Egypt (barrier eight) who is yet to win from three Caulfield runs, but was beaten less than a length when sixth at Moonee Valley over the distance on September 23.

Gabella is drawn a treat in gate three with Damian Lane in the saddle of this veteran Lindsay Park-trained seven-year-old.

She ran 10^th to Jameka in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m) last time out and back against a field of her own kind over a mile, her chances to atone with a top three finish are improved.

Of the double-figure chances there looks to be plenty of value including the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Fastnet Rock four-year-old Serene Majesty ($11) who has winning form at the track, proven miler (6-3-1-0) Iggimacool ($12) who can improve on her Stocks Stakes seventh at Moonee Valley last time out with the speed on here and Michael Moroney’s last start 1400m Caulfield winner Alaskan Rose ($13).
