Money Rolls in for Omei Sword to Win Silver Shadow

Despite not having won in stakes’ class the Chris Waller-trained Omei Sword is all the rage in 2016 Silver Shadow Stakes betting in Sydney this afternoon.

Calliope

A line-up of 11 three-year-old fillies take to the Randwick track in Race 5 at 2:20pm (AEST) on Warwick Stakes Day for the $175,000 Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) and all the money in early betting at Ladbrokes.com.au is on the favourite.

Drawn midfield in barrier five with Brenton Avdulla booked for the ride, Waller’s daughter of High Chaparral kicks off her three-year-old campaign in the Group 2 looking for her first Black-Type win.

She hasn’t won since a successful 1100m debut at Rosehill last February, after which she caught the eye with a second to Calliope in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m).

Her latest run was on April 2 at Randwick when she crossed over seven lengths away ninth behind the 2016 Golden Rose-bound filly Yankee Rose in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).

Since then Waller has given Omei Sword three Sydney trials, the latest producing a quiet seventh behind Prompt Response on August 15 over 900m at Rosehill.

The master trainer is confident he has her spot on for a win this afternoon and the punters agree, Omei Sword the market mover at Ladbrokes.com.au backed in from $2.80 to $2.25.

It’s a short price but one the race fans are happy to take.

Her two major rivals that also are at single-figures in the latest Silver Shadow Stakes odds meanwhile are on the drift including Manaya who has eased out form $3.70 to $4.

The Michael Costa-trained Hincinbrook filly jumps one on the outside of Omei Sword from barrier six and has Glyn Schofield in the saddle.

Schofield was full of praise after riding the lightly-raced youngster in a Warwick Farm trial on August 12 when she ran fourth over 1000m behind Impending.

Costa though told the media he thought she should have done more, her inexperience perhaps playing on the mind of the punters.

Still, Manaya was ultra-impressive at Scone on debut in mid-May when she sliced through the field in the Listed Woodlands Stakes (1100m) to win from a double-digit draw by one and a half-lengths.

Third pick for today’s Group 2, a traditional lead-up to October’s $500,000 Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m), is Calliope who is also on the drift our from $4.20 to $5.50.

She lines-up for the Godolphin stable in barrier seven with James McDonald back aboard the John O’Shea-trained daughter of Exceed And Excel for the first time since her win over Omei Sword in the Magic Night.

That was Calliope’s second stakes success following her win on debut in Randwick’s Listed Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) last October, while her latest run produced a 12th in the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) in March that she’s out to improve on here.

Along with the favourite the only other filly to firm in her price for an upset Silver Shadow Stakes result is Thyme For Roses ($14 into $11).

She represents last year’s winning trainer Gai Waterhouse who won with Speak Fondly in 2015 and is first-up off a winning trial at the track from earlier in the month.
