Set to run as Doomben Race 7 at 4:01pm (AEST), this year’s $650,000 Group 1 Hardy Brothers Doomben Cup (2000m) features just 10 runners.

Topping Doomben Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at $3.50 for the win is the John O’Shea-trained four-year-old Hauraki.

A three-time Group 1 runner-up, the Godolphin-raced son of Reset is chasing an elite level success of his own and gets the run of the race from barrier one with James McDonald retaining the ride.

Hauraki comes off a second in the Group 2 A.D. Hollindale Stakes (1800m) at the Gold Coast a fortnight ago, a lead-up race stablemate It’s Somewhat also comes from.

The five-year-old is second favourite at $5.50 for the Doomben Cup win and is out to atone on his fifth last time out.

It’s a wide open Doomben Cup betting market this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival with a further three single-figure fancies so see below for who to sack and who to back at Ladbrokes.com.au this weekend!

Our 2016 Doomben Cup Trifecta Tip is #1 Volkstok’n’barrell from #2 Hauraki and #9 Noble Protector

1st

#1 Volkstok’n’barrell ($6)

Donna Logan & Chris Gibbs’ New Zealand-trained four-year-old is a dual Group 1 winner over the 2000m including his Rosehill Guineas victory in Sydney as a three-year-old last Autumn. That was his first elite level win and he followed in up with a third in the ATC Derby, a race Saturday’s favourite Hauraki was runner-up in. This campaign he won back-to-back Group 1s back home before a Doncaster Mile 10th that he quickly atoned for at the Gold Coast with a Hollindale third. That race is the formline to follow into the Doomben Cup and in this small field from a mid-field gate back up to his pet distance, he’s a good thing at good odds.

2nd

#2 Hauraki ($3.50)

Deserving favourite has the right last start form when runner-up in the Hollindale. McDonald stays aboard form the inside alley, but while he’s been very consistent, Hauraki hasn’t won a race since March last year. Runner-up in last year’s ATC Derby over 2400m, he’s proven over more metres and will enjoy the 2000m on Saturday. Was runner-up over 2000m in the Ranvet Stakes earlier this season and is ticking plenty of boxes.

3rd

#9 Noble Protector ($9)

Value bet in the race is Robert Smerdon’s six-year-old mare who has been racing well this time in. She’s yet to run at Doomben but over 2000m has a good record of a win and a second from two runs. Her latest assignment was in Sydney’s Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m). She finished third to Azkadellia in that, and that mare is favourite for the upcoming Doomben 10,000 and Stradbroke Handicap. Brought on fitness-wise with a trial at Cranbourne on May 9 and finished second to Caulfield Cup placegetter Our Ivanhowe.
