Kuro Switches Stables for Spring Racing Carnival

Rising four-year-old Kuro has posted several commendable results at the highest level for trainer Joe Pride since first appearing on course in 2015, but has been transferred to the care of Lee and Anthony Freedman for the 2015 Spring Carnival as a result of few targets in his formerly native Sydney.

Kuro has secured a particularly impressive six wins and four minors through only 13 competitive starts so far and arguably found career-best form to date for Pride through the recent Autumn Carnival; running third in the Listed Fireball Stakes (1100m) first-up before charging home for second in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) most notably.

Jason Abrahams from Kuro’s syndicate Champion Thoroughbreds told the Sydney Morning Herald the team has been thrilled with the Denman colt’s time with Pride and are disappointed there are so few Group 1 options for the horse in Sydney.

“Joe has done a great job with him but he is turning four and we are looking to make him a stallion prospect and there just aren’t the races in Sydney to achieve that,” Abrahams said.

“There are three Group 1s in Melbourne for sprinters in the spring and none in Sydney. It makes more sense to have him trained down there.

“There are more options in the autumn for him down there as well and he can come back after that for races up here.

“If he can win a Group 1 it would make him a stallion, and Royal Ascot would also become an option.

“Lee (Freedman) has been there with success before.”

Beginning his racing career under the guidance of now Godolphin trainer John O’Shea, Kuro won a Hawkesbury minor over 1000m first-up; progressing to sixth in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes (1200m) and fifth in the Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) before returning to the paddock.

Returning in spring in exceptional condition, Kuro won each of his first four starts, including both the Listed Heritage Stakes (1100m) and Listed Brian Crowley Stakes (1200m) before charging home for a close second behind Brazen Beau in the featured Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on November 1st.
