In an upset Dane Ripper Stakes 2015 result, Lee & Anthony Freedman’s in-form mare Hazard enjoyed a narrow win over Chris Waller’s great grey Catkins at Doomben Racecourse on Stradbroke Handicap Day.
The feature race for fillies and mares on the program, this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Best Security Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) saw Waller’s always-honest runner Catkins jump the even money favourite through Ladbrokes.com.au.
A five-time Group 1 placegetter from seven starts in elite level company, the super-consistent daughter of Dubwai had Hugh Bowman back in the saddle for the Dane Ripper, which was her first run since a second in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes over the Randwick mile on April 11.
Catkins, well behaved before the jump, was best out of the gates flying out of barrier eight to hit the front and lead setting the pace.
Also quick to join the favourite up on the speed was the Mick Price-trained Jazz Song who settled into second while Peron also put herself in the race early.
After moving into fourth, Peter Moody’s other runner Bring Me The Maid from the inside alley with Luke Nolen aboard ran to find third on the rails while her stablemate Peron was tucked-up in the middle.
Catkins and Jazz Song held one-two throughout the run while Rose Of Choice was doing it tough out wide three deep in fourth just behind the young filly Bring Me The Maid.
Rounding the home turn, Catkins led into the straight while the Flemington-based Flying Spur five-year-old Hazard and her hoop James McDonald were closing fast down the outside.
Catkins had a real challenge on her hands over the closing stages as the Godolphin-raced Hazard, who came off a win at Morphettville in the Group 3 Proud Miss Stakes (1200m) from May 16, raced up and went to the lead 100m from the line.
She held on for a one length win over Catkins ($2), the now even more valuable broodmare prospect Hazard ($8) a winner of four of her five starts this time in, while Bound For Earth ($26) added value to the Dane Ripper Stakes trifecta.
Ridden patiently by Blake Shinn, the Toby Edmonds-trained Northern Meteor mare Bound For Earth made up late ground to run third for the second time in as many starts having last been seen crossing just over a length away third in the Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) at Scone.
The traditional next start for Dane Ripper Stakes graduates is the $400,000 Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) running this winter at the Gold Coast Racecourse on June 20.
The Dane Ripper Stakes – Tattersall’s Tiara double has been completed twice in as many years with the Waller-trained Red Tracer (2013) and Gai Waterhouse’s Cosmic Endeavour (2014) winning both races, a feat Hazard is now likely to attempt Saturday week.
Catkins, who ran fourth in last year’s Tattersall’s Tiara, is also set for another shot at the fillies-and-mares’ classic.
