2015 Sydney Cup Final Field and Barrier Draw

A talent-rich and capacity field has been confirmed to contest Saturday’s Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) on Day 2 of The Championship at Royal Randwick; highlighted by the inclusion of some of Australia’s leading stayers and several notable international raiders.

Red Cadeaux etched his name into Australian racing folklore when finishing second in the Melbourne Cup for a third time in 2014, and will leave from barrier 12 in his maiden Sydney Cup tilt on Saturday.

Posting seven wins and a further 18 minor place finishes through his 49 career starts so far, Red Cadeaux is a Group 1 winner having taken out the 2012 edition of the Hong Kong Vase (2400m) and has returned to Australia in typically competitive form this time after placing fifth in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) on March 14th.

Having been accepted into the final field for the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on Saturday as well as the Sydney Cup, travelling foreman Robin Trevor-Jones said the team will wait until later in the week to decide on which avenue to take with Red Cadeaux.

Godolphin runner Hartnell has produced several impressive efforts on his way to the Sydney Cup and is offered a great opportunity to find ideal running position from barrier 7.

Beginning his racing tenure under the guidance of Mark Johnston before arriving in the care of John O’Shea prior to the Autumn Carnival, Hartnell was given little chance of success in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) first-up on February 28th but finished an agonizingly-close second to stable mate Contributer.

Having since won both the Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 The BMW (2400m), Tommy Berry is confident his mount will be difficult to beat in the Sydney Cup.

Who Shot Thebarman boxed on for an impressive third in the Melbourne Cup in November and will have no issue settling into a good running position within the field from gate 10.

The winner of the 2014 edition of the Group 1 Auckland Cup (3200m), the Yamanin Vital gelding placed fifth in the Chipping Norton Stakes first-up this time; progressing to fourth in each of the Sky High Stakes and The BMW most recently.

Hong Kong raider Dominant was allocated gate 5 at Tuesday’s 2015 Sydney Cup barrier draw and appears on track for a competitive performance after running fifth in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) on March 21st.

Claiming five wins and a further eight minor place finishes through his 31 competitive starts to date, the Cacique entire ran fourth in the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase (2400m) most notably over summer and will carry 56.5kgs on Saturday.

Melbourne Cup champion Protectionist is yet to post much of a competitive run of form this season but will relish a step-up to 3200m for the Sydney Cup when leaving from barrier 2 on Saturday.
