2015 Rosehill Guineas Odds: Hard to Split Top Two

Just seven three-year-olds will run in the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) but that doesn’t mean it’s any easier to tip the winner.

Four of the runners are offering single figure odds at Ladbrokes.com.au, with Hallowed Crown and Sweynesse hard to split at the top.

The Bart & James Cummings-trained Hallowed Crown has just edged out as favourite at $2.70 but John O’Shea’s Sweynesse isn’t far behind at $2.80.

Hallowed Crown is in great form after coming up trumps in both of his two starts this campaign, beating home Sweynesse in the process, however the colt has never been tested over 2000 metres and will have to jump from the outside gate on Saturday.

The colt won the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) just a head in front of Sweynesse first-up on February 21 before winning the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) by three-quarters of a length on March 7.

So while Sweynesse was beaten by Hallowed Crown on the two occasions, it was only just, and the colt will start two gates in from barrier five with James McDonald.

Sweynesse is also set to relish the step up to 2000 metres, which O’Shea believes is the colt’s ideal trip – he scored a minor placing in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) back in October.

Rounding out the 2015 Rosehill Guineas single figure betting are New Zealand-based Mongolian Khan ($5.50) and Volkstok’n’barrell ($6) – who finished first and second in the Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) on February 28.

The Murray Baker-trained Mongolian Khan has impressively won six of his seven career starts, a statistic similar to that of favourite Hallowed Crown, including the Group 2 Waikato Guineas which was over 2000 metres. The colt will jump from barrier six with Opie Bosson to ride.

Donna Logan’s Volkstok’n’barrel finished runner-up in the New Zealand Derby but will be stepping up to 2000 metres for the first time on Saturday. The gelding will jump from barrier two with jockey Craig Williams.
