Legendary trainer Bart Cummings has been dealt a double blow, the Cups King losing two of his stable stars for the 2010 Spring Racing Carnival after Moatize and Sirmione both suffered tendon injuries.
Scratched from this Saturday’s Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield and set to miss the remainder of the season, Danehill Dancer six-year-old Moatize finished 10th last start in the Memsie Stakes.
Moatize was also one of Cummings’ chances for the 2010 Melbourne Cup, but after suffering a tendon injury in trackwork could be set for retirement.
Encosta De Lago gelding Sirmione has also been ruled out for the season, the seven-year-old also failing to impress last start finishing just one place better than Moatize in the Memsie.
Cummings is still confident going into the 2010 Underwood Stakes, one of the first two Group 1 races in Melbourne for the spring along with the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, as he gets ready to start Cox Plate champion So You Think.
So You Think is the hot favourite in the Underwood, currently paying $1.80 through Sportsbet, after drawing ideally with barrier two and will face off against a field full of stars including Melbourne Cup winner Shocking and stablemate Dariana.
