Carriages Forgotten Horse in Magic Millions Classic 2015

Sydney’s Gai Waterhouse believes her smart young filly Carriages is the forgotten horse in Saturday’s 2015 Magic Millions Classic field on the Gold Coast and believes she should be topping the markets for the restricted showdown.

A capacity field went down to the ballot for this year’s $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) with Waterhouse’s Hinchinbrook filly Carriages to be ridden by dual winner over the event Tommy Berry for her third career run.

On debut the $110,000 yearling buy finished third behind Mine Two in the $85,000 TAB Betting Season 2YO Plate (1000m) at Randwick on November 8 when weakening late after being challenged over the final 300m.

She improved 14 days later however when taken to Ballarat, Craig Williams jumping on her back for a smart two length victory over Prompt Return in the $200,000 Magic Millions Clockwise Classic (1000m).

She was quick out of the gates that day and crossed over to lead, working hard and fighting off all those that came for her in an impressive all-the-way victory that Waterhouse believes should see her dominating the Ladbrokes.com.au markets for Saturday’s lucrative showdown.

The bookmakers have been a little wary with Carriages however who was paying around $13 in the pre-barrier draw Magic Millions Classic odds led by Claudia Jean ($5.50) and Wicked Intent ($6).

By Saturday it will be 49 days between runs for the filly, but Waterhouse remains unfazed knowing she can run well fresh with the trainer chasing her fifth Magic Millions 2YO Classic victory.

“I’ve done it before (off the long break) with Sebring and No Looking Back,” Waterhouse told News Corp.

“These are two-year-olds and they don’t need to race week after week.

“Carriages is really going well and I can’t see why she shouldn’t be favourite for the Magic Millions — her form is outstanding.

“She had a trial (jump-out at Doomben) the other day and just toyed with them.

“Tommy Berry rode her and said if the filly had worn blinkers, she would have been even more explosive.”

Sebring won the 2008 Golden Slipper for Waterhouse off a 49-day break while the now retired mare No Looking Back was first past the post in the 2012 Magic Millions 2YO Classic after 56 days away from the track before losing on protest to stable mate Driefontein in 2012.

Waterhouse’s other winners were: Assertive Lad (2000), Excellerator (2001) and Dance Hero (2004) before Driefontein did it again a decade later.

Berry’s victories meanwhile were aboard Karuta Queen (2011) and the aforementioned Driefontein (2012).

The 2015 Magic Millions 2YO Classic barriers are set for release shortly so stay tuned.
