Permit Heads 2014 ATC Cup Field

Chris Waller’s veteran stayer Permit wears the number one saddlecloth in Saturday’s ATC Cup 2014 field at Rosehill Gardens, one of three black types on the Sydney summer meet.

The Dansili eight-year-old leads a field of just 10 gallopers facing off in this year’s $100,000 Listed ATC Cup (2000m), the day’s headline race due to run as Race 5 at 3:45pm (AEDT).

Twelve months ago Permit finished dead last behind the Gai Waterhouse-trained Travolta in the same race, an explained disappointment he quickly atoned for by winning the Listed Christmas Cup (2000m) – Listed Tattersall’s Club Cup (2400m) double later that summer.

This time in Permit has had just the one run when a close first-up third, beaten only a quarter length, by Malice in the $85,000 Cellarbrations@Valentine Handicap (1900m) at Rosehill on November 15.

With that run under his belt he now shoots for another Sydney Summer Racing Carnival win, Blake Shinn staying on the 59kg top weight who jumps from barrier two.

Permit’s last start conqueror, the John O’Shea-trained Malice also backs up in the ATC Cup this weekend drawn on the rails in barrier one with Sam Clipperton to ride.

Making a name now for himself as a senior hoop, young Clipperton was aboard the Godolphin-owned Teofilo four-year-old for his past two runs including the handicap win a fortnight ago this Saturday.

Malice carried only 54kg last time out and again gets in on the minimum here, a big advantage and one that could see the gelding start at the top of the ATC Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au later in the week.

O’Shea and Godolphin are also represented in the ATC Cup field on Saturday by returning Street Cry four-year-old Gallatin out wide in barrier eight with Tommy Berry to ride.

The up-and-comer, sixth behind the now Hong Kong-bound Criterion in the Group 1 ATC Derby (2400m) back in April, was last seen racing at Rosehill on September 24 when a close fourth crossing just three-quarters of a length off the winner Deane Martin in the Group 3 Colin Stephen Handicap (2400m).

Waller also has two ATC Cup hopes this year with Permit joined by Beyond Thankful, the Whipper five-year-old coming via a fourth to Malice at the track last time out.

Following Permit in the ATC Cup weights meanwhile on 56.5kg is the Sam Kavanagh-trained Midsummer Sun in gate three for jockey Tye Angland.

The Monson seven-year-old, runner-up behind Entirely Platinum over 1900m here in the Group 3 Sky High Stakes back in March, was runner-up to Malice over that same track and distance two weeks ago and is tipped to improve here.

The gelding was beaten only a nose that day with 57kg and so drops in weights and should appreciate the step up to 2000mhaving won up to a mile and a half (2400m) previously.

The other most notable ATC Cup final acceptor is the only other last start winner in the mix, Peter Moody’s Metaphorical with the outside barrier (10) to overcome.

Dwayne Dunn has the ride on the Dylan Thomas mare, the four-year-old having defeated a field full of fellow female gallopers over 2040m at Moonee Valley on November 14 with 57kg.

She’s up in class then for this but will appreciate the drop back to 54kg.
