This weekend the action of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival kicks up a notch with Caulfield Cup Day stealing the show where one of the 10 Saturday races is the Tristarc Stakes 2014 – betting tips for the mares’ showdown found right here.
A talented line-up of 10 mares make up the field for this year’s $200,000 Group 2 Schweppes Tristarc Stakes (1400m) including the current $2.90 favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au, Catkins.
Chris Waller’s Group 1 placed daughter of Dubawi is in flying form as always including her first-up Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) win at Rosehill.
The five-year-old grey was defeated as the odds-on favourite last time out however when nabbed by Arabian Gold in the Group 3 Golden Pendant (1400m), an effort she’ll be out to atone for here as she races at Caulfield for just the second time.
Close second pick in Tristarc Stakes betting at $3.30 and firming is then the Gai Waterhouse-trained Sweet Idea, the market mover coming via a fourth to Trust In A Gust in the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m).
So are these top two mares the ones you should lock into your Tristarc Stakes quinella selections at Ladbrokes?
Or is there value to be found further down the markets from the likes of Group 1 Schweppes Oaks winner May’s Dream ($9) or Girl Guide ($9.50) who won the Group 3 How Now Stakes two back at the track?
#3 Sweet Idea ($3.30)
She’s the Tristarc Stakes market mover and we think based on her exciting form of late she can defeat the favourite and score her second Group 2 win of the season. Won the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) first-up over the boys at Randwick and then ran second to Dissident in the Group 1 Memsie Stakes over this track and distance on August 30. Backed up from that with the Sir Rupert fourth, beaten just over two lengths, and should be gunning to go stepping down in class. Will put herself into this race regardless of what the pace does and will take some running down.
#4 Catkins ($2.90)
Is the mare featuring at the top of all the markets in these races this type of year and the form usually holds. It didn’t last time out however when Arabian Gold ran her down in the Golden Pendant. No excuses that day as she had a sweet run and jumped deserving $1.40 shorite. Slightly longer price this time with punters a bit wary now of the dual Group 1 placegetter. Will be close, Hugh Bowman stays on and expect a fighting finish.
#7 Politeness ($5.50)
Craig Williams rides this Robert Smerdon-trained Street Sense four-year-old who comes off two fourth place finishes, two races the bookies are backing the form of to stand up here. How Now Stakes behind Girl Guide first-up under half a length from the winner in a blanket finish and then behind Forever Loved in the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on October 4. Hasn’t won over the distance but does have third place finishes from five starts.
