Sertorius, who disappointed in Saturday’s Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) with a 9th place finish, is out of the 2014 Caulfield Stakes.

Trainers Jamie Edwards & Bruce Elkington have decided the gelding’s best route for the 2014 Melbourne Cup is now the Group 3 Geelong Cup (2400m) on October 22.

While jockey Craig Williams believes the drop to handicap conditions would see the horse run well and finish top-five in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m), Edwards has a different view.

The co-trainer doesn’t have confidence in the quick back-up to Saturday’s $3 million race for Sertorius, especially considering his Caulfield Stakes run.

“I didn’t think his run [on Saturday] was good enough to win a Caulfield Cup,” Edwards said to TVN.

“He raced okay. In my opinion he didn’t go bad, he didn’t go good, I didn’t think it was a run that would see him winning the Caulfield Cup.

“He really looked as if the Melbourne, not Caulfield, Cup would suit him. He was good after the winning post and took a bit of pulling up.”

Edwards then made his plans for a run in the 2014 Geelong Cup, four days after the Caulfield Cup, known.

“I think the better thing for the horse in the long term is the Geelong Cup – 10 days between runs,” he said.

“I’ll give him a good gallop on the Saturday morning before and go into the Geelong Cup 100 percent and then train on for the Melbourne Cup.”

Sertorius was a $26 bet for the 2014 Caulfield Cup odds at Ladbrokes.com.au before he was pulled.

Lucia Valentina continues to lead the betting market at $5, followed by Bande ($7.50).
