Earthquake Odds-On in 2014 Furious Stakes Betting

After her original first-up run was canned due to a wet track, John O’Shea’s gun filly Earthquake will return to racing this Saturday jumping the odds-on favourite to win the Furious Stakes 2014 at Royal Randwick Racecourse.

A Heavy-rated Randwick course for the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) on August 23 saw connections of Exceed And Excel filly Earthquake pull the pin on her returning last month.

She was saved instead then for this weekend with the $1.57 million earner to start in the red to win the $175,000 Group 2 Coolmore Furious Stakes (1200m).

Earthquake, winner of the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield in February along with three of her other five career starts, pays $1.80 through Ladbrokes.com.au in their Furious Stakes odds after drawing barrier three.

Saturday will be her first start since suffering her first loss when runner-up to Mossfun in the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) back in early April, a race run on a Heavy (8) Rosehill track.

Conditions in Sydney ahead of Saturday are still a little damp but the day should be run on nothing worse than Slow giving Earthquake the chance to kick off her spring campaign and get back in the winner’s stall.

Following the obvious favourite it is red hot Furious Stakes betting market with four of the other six fillies in the field at single figures to win with:

  • #2 Peggy Jean ($4.80) – Gerald Ryan prepares the other Group 1 winner in the field, the daughter of Myboycharlie having beaten the boys on April 2 in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on a Heavy (9) track. She returned to Randwick a fortnight later for a step up to a mile when fifth, beaten 4.4 lengths, in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) and so should appreciate going back down to this distance on the weekend. Nice lead-up trail at Kensington, goes well at this track (3-2-0-0) and as mentioned the distance will suit (3-1-1-1).
  • #3 Memorial ($7) – Other O’Shea-trained runner representing Godolphin, this Street Cry filly has won two of her seven starts to date but it’s been a while since she won a race. Latest effort was a first-up second to Bring Me The Maid in the Silver Shadow and likes ground Dead – Slow which she gets on Saturday.
  • #5 Winx ($8) – Chris Waller’s fellow Street Cry filly is first-up here having run third in the same 840m Kensington trial Peggy Jean was second in on August 23. Winx is undefeated to date with back-to-back Sydney wins in June. She sees Randwick for the first time here however and is yet to race in black-type company so this will be the test to see how much merit was in those opening two victories.
  • #6 Sultry Feeling ($9) – Early money coming for the Bart & James Cummings-trained Encosta De Lago filly who has firmed in from $10. Has won two from five including her last start on August 20 over 1100m at Canterbury. This is tougher but she did well in March when third behind Bring Me The Maid and Peggy Jean in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) – the form of which has held.

Rounding out the Furious Stakes markets are then Silver Shadow Stakes fourth past the post Alpha Miss ($19) and $81 roughie Sailing Past on the rails for her debut with Brenton Avdulla riding.

The latest Furious Stakes 2014 odds are found in the table below complete with links to Ladbrokes.com.au where you can take on Earthquake land back any other runner at $1.85 with the exclusive Favourite v The Field markets!
