2014 Thousand Guineas Target for Traveston Girl

After destroying odds-on favourite Miss Cover Girl at Doomben on Saturday, the Tony Gollan-trained Traveston Girl earned herself a Thousand Guineas 2014 target in Melbourne this spring carnival.

The rising three-year-old daughter of Flying Spur made it back-to-back wins at career start number three on Tattersall’s Mile Day with her commanding effort, done in incredible time, in the $50,000 Breakfast Creek Hotel Handicap (1200m).

Now earmarked for a Group 1 target this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, Traveston Girl became one of the few juveniles to get down towards 69 seconds over the 1200m with her 1:09.20 winning time.

“She’s a very good filly,” Gollan said post-win on Saturday.

“I thought today might be a bit short.

“I can’t wait to get her over more ground.”

Reunited with ace apprentice hoop Tegan Harrison, the $11 chance never looked in doubt when defeating the Kelly Schweida-trained shortie Miss Cover Girl ($1.80) who suffered the first defeat of her five start career to date.

In third a nose further away was then Top Tone ($8) for local trainer Lorraine Erhart.

Harrison rode Traveston Girl for her debut at Doomben back on June 11 where a luckless run saw the filly end up four lengths away sixth behind Miss Cover Girl over 1030m.

After missing her second start, the filly winning at Eagle Farm by three lengths over the 1200m, she was happy to atone for their first loss with Saturday’s big win.

“I trialled her leading into this preparation and rode her at her first start, but nothing went right and she got beaten,” Harrison said.

“I was suspended when she won at her second start and today she has shown the ability we thought she had all along.”

The duo had a wide barrier (10 of 11) to overcome and Traveston Girl had to do a lot of work early.

It didn’t faze her however as she continued at top speed all the way to the line to earn her shot at the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield on October 11.

“We will give her a freshen up now and have a crack at the Thousand Guineas,” Gollan confirmed.

It’s a big target for a filly Gollan snapped up for just $60,000 at the 2013 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, a price far under what he’d expected her to attract.

“We got her for $60,000, I couldn’t believe it,” he said.

“I thought there must have been something wrong with her.”

Favourite in pre-nomination Thousand Guineas betting markets is the Darley-owned Blue Diamond Stakes winner Earthquake.

The River Junction Racing-owned Traveston Girl, raced by the same connections as Gollan’s Group 1 JJ Atkins third placed gelding Looks Like The Cat, is set to be added into the equation too then and will sure to get some early love after her stunning Brisbane effort.
