Greg Eurell’s stakes winning galloper Red Colossus is being aimed at the coveted Cups double at this year’s Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the three-year-old nominated for both the 2010 Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

Testa Rossa gelding Red Colossus had an impressive autumn campaign stringing together three straight wins including the Listed Chairman’s Stakes (2014m) in April before running an eye-catching second to Peter Snowden’s Kidnapped in the Group 1 South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville last start.

Having been spelled after his gallant Derby run, Red Colossus is set to resume racing in the spring with the $2.5 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 16 his first major target.

Following the Caulfield Cup, Red Colossus will then have the 2010 Melbourne Cup in his sights, the famous Flemington feature worth an unprecedented $6 million in prizemoney plus trophies this year.

Back in work on Thursday after a month of pre-training, Red Colossus has had just 10 career starts for four wins earning $194,163 for his connections.

Eurell is yet to name a set first-up race for Red Colossus, but is looking at a middle-distance gallop over 1,300 or 1,400 metres.

Throughout his promising preparation at the start of the year, Red Colossus was ridden by jockey Chris Symons.

Symons is reportedly eager to renew his association with Red Colossus for the spring, the hoop optimistic about the possibility of a Group 1 win.

In the 2009 Melbourne Cup, won by the Mark Kavanagh-trained Shocking, Symons had the mount on Kibbutz who placed ninth.

This year marks the 150^th running of the esteemed Melbourne Cup, which is scheduled to jump as Race 7 at Flemington on Tuesday November 2.
