2012 Caulfield Guineas – Pierro Shortest Priced Favourite in History

Prolific Sydney trainer and Hall of Famer Gai Waterhouse is preparing to saddle-up the shortest priced favourite in Caulfield Guineas history this Saturday when her Cox Plate-bound youngster Pierro steps out to defend their undefeated status.

Pierro

Pierro is set to jump the shortest priced favourite in history in the 2012 Caulfield Guineas on Saturday

In the latest odds for the $1 million Group 1 The Age Caulfield Guineas (1600m) at the Aussie bookmakers Lonhro colt Pierro is as short as $1.30 having won all eight of their career starts to date.

The $230,000 yearling purchase from the 2011 Gold Coast Magic Millions Sales has already amassed over $3.1 million in prize money thanks to their trio of Group 1 victories including the world’s richest 2YO’s event, the $3.5 million Golden Slipper back in April.

This time in Pierro showed they were no fluke juvenile with two more victories first in the Group 3 The Run To The Rose (1200m) at Rosehill before they stormed home in their Melbourne debut defeating Carringbush Jack by a blistering five lengths in the Group 2 Bill Stutt Stakes over the Moonee Valley mile on September 28.

On Saturday they head to Caulfield Racecourse for the first time for the Caulfield Guineas 2012 and there looks to be little stopping them from posting their ninth straight victory on way to the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) back at Moonee Valley on October 27.

As well as being the odds-on favourite for the Caulfield Guineas betting markets Pierro is also dominating Cox Plate betting at bookmaker.com.au paying $2.70 to win Australasia’s weight-for-age championship.

That price is sure to come in when 2012 Cox Plate third acceptances are taken tomorrow, Tuesday October 9, and their odds in the Caulfield Guineas markets are also sure to firm when the Caulfield Guineas final field is released tomorrow as well.

Currently there are 34 official Caulfield Guineas entries, the next best fancied of which is the Peter Snowden-trained Commands colt Epaulette.

Epaulette ran third to Pierro in The Run To The Rose first-up this spring, a huge improvement on their dead last in the Golden Slipper, before going on to become a Group 1 winner in the Godlen Rose.

They backed up on September 30 catching an early look at Caulfield, a luxury that has not been afforded to Pierro, when they won the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m).

Waterhouse however remain unfazed that Pierro will be seeing Caulfield for the first time in the Guineas rating the horse as a versatile star that can handle almost anything thrown at him.

“He’s very versatile. He’s a superstar and he’ll pick it up immediately,” Waterhouse, who has Pierro stabled at Flemington, said.

“He couldn’t be happier there (in Melbourne).

“His work on Friday was superb and I can’t see any reason to take him to Caulfield to work during the week.

“He still has a big few weeks ahead of him as it’s a task to win the Cox Plate as a three-year-old.”

Jockey Nash Rawiller, aboard for all of Pierro’s runs to date, agrees with his boss as he looks to ride his first Caulfield Guineas winner.

“He’s bombproof,” he said.

“I can’t see it (the track) troubling him.

“If he can go to the Valley and run like that (in the Bill Stutt Stakes), then he can do the same at Caulfield.

“From the moment he jumped, he was on the right leg. He’s a true professional.”

Two horses unlikely to be accepted for the Caulfield Guineas 2012 are then Pierro’s stablemate Proisir who suffered their first loss when going down in a shock defeat to It’s A Dundeel in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) last Saturday, and another Waterhouse runner Kabayan who won the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) last time out.

Other notable chances pre-acceptance stage then include Caulfield Guineas Prelude third placed Awesome Bro, Black Caviar’s half-brother All Too Hard who ran a credible fourth in the Group 1 George Main Stakes over the Randwick mile on September 22, and the Mick Price-trained Let Go Lenni.
