The Breeders? Stakes is the final race in the prestigious Canadian Triple Crown. First run in 1889, it is run over a distance of 1 ? miles at the Woodbine Racetrack at Toronto in August, making it the longest race of the three Triple Crown events. Worth CAN $500 000, the stakes are high for runners who have previously competed and won in the first two Triple Crown events, the Queen?s Plate in June and the Prince of Wales Stakes in July. All three events are run on a different track surface, and the Breeders? is raced on turf.
The field of runners is made up of a competitive bunch of Canadian bred three-year-olds, and the largest number of starters in the Breeders? Stakes was 15 horses in 1987. Since then, then smallest field was seen in 1993 when only 4 entries took to the starting gates.
When betting on the Breeders? Stakes there are a number of interesting facts, statistics and trends to consider including the fact that barrier numbers 10-13 have never produced a winner. The most successful post position over the race?s history is barrier number three, having spurred ten winners. This is followed by barrier number six with eight winners. Also, colts have dominated in this race with nearly 30 wins, followed by fillies and then geldings.
