Bid Spotter Claims Upset Win in 2011 NE Manion Cup – Rosehill Race 8 Results
Bid Spotter wins the 2011 NE Manion Cup in upset result at Rosehill
Winner of the Group 3 Hobart Cup (2200m) in Tasmania during February, after running a distant 14th in the Launceston Cup last start Bid Spotter was not fancied by the punters at Rosehill today and went out as a $31 roughie in the markets for race eight.
The gelding’s win now has connections looking at the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick on April 23 as the next major autumn aim for Bid Spotter.
Favourite in the N E Manion Cup was the Gai Waterhouse-trained Once Were Wild at $4 who jumped away well from an outside gate to roll across and lead early before stablemate Lorne Dancer hit the front and set a slow pace.
Lorne Dancer stayed up front until around the 1100m mark when the field begin to close in on the leader.
Not happy with the pace, the Lee Freedman-trained Above Average was pushed up by jockey Corey Brown to sit second on the back of Lorne Dancer before hitting the lead with 300m left to travel.
Above Average looked the winner, but Bid Spotter and hoop Michael Rodd travelled quickly up on the inside to close in and score a narrow victory nudging out Above Average for the win right on the line.
In third was Chris Waller’s $51 roughie Stand To Gain while the Lloyd Williams-owned Mourayan was not disgraced finishing fourth.
Bid Spotter has now won seven of their 28 career starts for over $495,000 in prize money.
The testing 2011 Sydney Cup is now on the agenda for Bid Spotter who is set to move up the order of entry from his previous position of equal 22nd and also likely gain a penalty in the Sydney Cup weights previous allocated just 51kg.
Once Were Wild was one of the top fancies for the Sydney Cup this year but is likely to drift after her disappointing effort finishing well back in the N E Manion.
