The 2026 Silver Eagle results at Randwick on Saturday delivered a timely reminder of the immense talent possessed by former Group 1-winning mare Apocalyptic, who returned to her brilliant best with a hard-fought upset victory in the lucrative Listed feature over 1300m.

Sent out at $26, the Michael Freedman-trained daughter of Extreme Choice edged out Skyhook by a short neck, with race favourite Beiwacht another neck away in third, producing a performance that immediately propelled her into contention for the upcoming $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m).
The market reacted swiftly to the win, with Ladbrokes slashing Apocalyptic’s Golden Eagle 2026 odds from $51 into $15, firmly placing the Flight Stakes-winning mare among the leading chances for the rich four-year-old feature later this spring.

For Freedman, the victory was particularly satisfying after a frustrating twelve months in which the talented mare had consistently shown elite ability at home but failed to reproduce it on race day.
“She is back to her best today,” he told Sky Thoroughbred Central.
“It’s really satisfying because for the last six to twelve months, she has been going as well as she was twelve months ago at home, but on race day she has been doing a few things wrong.
“She’s been in a little bit of a mood and doing that hanging business up the straight, so we changed her gear around and put some visors on, a lugging bit on.
“It’s just great to see her back to what I know she’s capable of.”
The gear changes proved a masterstroke, with Apocalyptic settling well before producing the finishing sprint that once made her one of the highest-rated fillies of her generation.
The victory has now opened the door to a crack at the Golden Eagle at Randwick on October 31, a race Freedman believes is well within her reach if she continues on her upward trajectory.
“As long as she pulls up okay, I can’t see any reason why we wouldn’t have a crack at a race like that because she is one of the better horses I’ve ever had anything to do with,” he said.
“I’m just so thrilled to see her back in form.
“I know how good she is when she’s right.”
Freedman again praised the stable’s willingness to experiment with equipment changes to unlock the mare’s best form.
“We had to tinker around with a bit of gear for today with putting visors on and a lugging bit and it was great to see her back doing what I know she is capable of,” he explained.
Winning jockey Tommy Berry was equally emotional after the success, revealing the roar he let out after the post was more about relief than the race itself.
“It wasn’t about the race that it was, that roar over the line,” Berry said.
“So much has gone into her back home. She has been so frustrating this preparation, she has been doing things in races that she doesn’t do at home.”
Berry credited the entire team for refusing to give up on the mare despite a series of disappointing performances.
“Full credit to Michael. Between Wajid, his trackwork rider, Michael, Ben and Sophie, we’ve all thrown in ideas to try to change the gear around,” he said.
“She has tested our patience, but it was nice to get that win today.
“That roar over the line, I know it wasn’t a Group One, but it was more the feeling it was great for the whole team.”
Having ridden countless top-class horses throughout his career, Berry remains convinced Apocalyptic possesses elite natural ability.
“I’ve been riding twenty years, and not many can do what she does at home on the track,” he said.
“I’ve told plenty of people she’s an absolute beast, and that’s why it’s so frustrating.
“She’s beaten some very good horses there.”
Berry did however leave some question marks over the Golden Eagle’s 1500m trip, suggesting the mare’s stamina remains the only query heading towards the rich feature.
“My only query with her is she’d had enough just on the line,” he admitted.
“There’s still an option to go to a Golden Eagle, and I know she ran that trip as a three-year-old, but I’m just not sure that’s her at the moment with where she’s at.
“I’ll leave it up to the team.”
For now, though, the focus remains on a performance that reignited Apocalyptic’s career at the highest level. After months of frustration, the talented mare finally delivered on her immense potential, and with her confidence restored and a Golden Eagle berth now firmly in sight, Saturday’s Silver Eagle triumph may prove to be the springboard to an even bigger payday in Sydney’s richest race for four-year-olds.
