A crucial Group 1 mile clash runs on Caulfield Guineas Day this Saturday, and Races.com.au have our expert 2026 Toorak Handicap field preview, tips and best bets on the $1 million event right here.

A key form reference to other elite level features of the spring and won by a host of greats over the years, the Toorak Handicap runs over the famous Caulfield mile and this year’s field features a typically open line-up of class middle-distance stars.
Sitting top of the latest Toorak Handicap betting odds at Ladbrokes is the Chris Waller-trained Lady Shenandoah at $6 to return to her former glory.
The consistent Snitzel mare was at her best as a three-year-old filly winning a trio of Group 1s including beating home her older rivals in last year’s Coolmore Classic.
She’s been absent from the winner’s stall since March in 2025 but remains a top-tier performer for the powerhouse Waller stable finishing out of the Top 4 in just one of her past 10 starts when seventh in last year’s The Everest.
This weekend has her third-up and fit off two strong fourth place efforts in the Winx Stakes and Sir Rupert Clarke either side of the border.
Up from 1400m to the mile now, and the money is coming for her should the team opt to keep her in the Toorak over a return to Sydney for the lucrative $1.5 million Alan Brown Stakes for which she’s also accepted for.
While she benefits from the booking of big race hoop James McDonald, Lady Shenandoah does have to carry the equal 58kg topweight which is a slight knock as is the only fair record of Toorak Handicap favourites in recent years.
Waller is yet to collect at Toorak trophy, but the master trainer has three in the mix this season with the favourite joined in the starting line-up by the widely drawn Group 1 Australasian Oaks winner Panova ($17) to be ridden by William Pike and Sun God ($18).
Currently second behind Lady Shenandoah at Toorak Handicap odds of $6.50 is Regal Award second-up off a lovely return from the Ole Kirk four-year-old who ran a brave third only 1.2 lengths off the winner Angel Capital in the Sir Rupert having set the speed before hanging on well.
Fitter for the run, proven at Caulfield and a past winner at 1600m, he goes up from 52.5kg to 55kg but remains in this weight-wise from a favourable gate four draw which keeps him in the mix.
Two other Toorak contenders are also under double figures for the win with the other 58kg topweight Evaporate ($7.50) racing fourth-up from barrier two and Lucy Yeoman‘s airborne mare Changing Colours ($8) at the other end of the weight scale in on just 52kg chasing her fifth win on the trot.
Lindsay Park‘s five-year-old, Evaporate, came off a nice third fresh behind boom galloper Cosmic Crusader in the Group 2 PB Lawrence before dropping in grade to take out the So You Think Stakes over 1500m at Sandown by a big margin defeating some good types.
With Cosmic Crusader proving too good for his Turnbull Stakes rivals last weekend, the form around Evaporate is strong.
He was ninth in the Sir Rupert but had barrier 15 of 16 hampering his chances and had to use up too much energy before fading out late.
He’ll get an easier go of it now back up in trip from a better barrier and, so long as he’s come through that run okay, there’s every chance he can bounce back.
Changing Colours meanwhile is the untapped chance here with the flying daughter of The Autumn Sun enjoying a stellar purple patch of form.
She’s unbeaten in her last four assignments including stepping up in grade for the Group 2 Stocks Stakes over this track and trip on September 27 to beat home Sass Appeal by a length.
While that might not be the greatest form indicator for the Toorak, she’s got the course and distance box ticked, is going so well and should relish coming back three kilos here and her blistering turn of foot can see her run over the top of them late.
Of the longer priced fancies chasing a Toorak upset, plenty have genuine claims at the title including the rails-drawn Ciaron Maher-trained Warnie ($10) and his class stablemate Salty Pearl ($11) who has a terrific mile record.
As for the Toorak Handicap roughies, Too Darn Discreet at $27 at time of publish looks well overlooked for an in-form mare doing plenty right down in the weights.
Dan O’Sullivan‘s Too Darn Hot five-year-old has been terrific this prep resuming with a second to fellow Toorak hopeful Pondalowie in the Group 2 Let’s Elope over 1400m at Flemington running out of her skin to be denied in a photo-thriller at blowout odds.
She went on with the job second-up in the Stocks Stakes running third and she now meets Changing Colours better in the weights.
The barrier (14) is a slight concern however and how far back Declan Bates takes her from the jump will be key to her chances, but she remains a key exotics inclusion.
The 2026 Toorak Handicap is set to run as Caulfield Race 9 at 5:10pm (AEDT) as the penultimate event on the Melbourne race card for Saturday.
